How to Create Custom Spray Lists in CorelDRAW

Creating custom spray lists in CorelDRAW allows you to transform your original vector designs into dynamic brush-like patterns that disperse along any path. By using the Artistic Media tool in Sprayer mode, you can combine multiple vector objects, save them as a collection, and apply them repeatedly across illustrations, borders, and backgrounds. This guide walks you through the step-by-step process of preparing your artwork, generating a custom spray list, and adjusting its distribution settings.

Step 1: Design and Prepare Your Objects

  1. Create or import the vector objects you want to include in your spray list. You can use shapes, text converted to curves, or complex illustrations.
  2. Group any multi-part graphics individually by selecting their components and pressing Ctrl + G. Each distinct graphic that should spray independently must be its own group or single object.
  3. Arrange your objects on the drawing page. If you want the spray list to contain multiple variations, select all the distinct objects or groups together.

Step 2: Access the Artistic Media Tool

  1. Select the Artistic Media tool from the Toolbox on the left (or press I on your keyboard).
  2. On the Property Bar at the top of the workspace, click the Sprayer icon (represented by a spray can).

Step 3: Save Your Custom Spray List

  1. With the objects still selected on your canvas, look at the Property Bar and locate the Save icon (a floppy disk next to the spray pattern drop-down menu).
  2. Click Save. CorelDRAW will open a dialog box prompting you to save the file.
  3. Enter a descriptive name for your spray list and click Save. CorelDRAW stores these files in your user profile's default Artistic Media folder with a .cmx extension, automatically registering the new list into the application.

Step 4: Apply and Customize the Spray List

  1. Deselect your original objects or delete them from the workspace.
  2. Using the Freehand tool or the Artistic Media tool, draw a path where you want the pattern to appear.
  3. On the Property Bar, open the Category drop-down menu and choose Custom (or the category under which your file was saved).
  4. Select your newly created spray list from the Spray List File List menu.
  5. Adjust the dispersal parameters on the Property Bar to refine your design:
    • Size of Objects: Scales the sprayed elements larger or smaller.
    • Spray Order: Dictates how objects alternate along the line (Randomly, Sequentially, or by Direction).
    • Dabs/Spacing: Adjusts the distance between each sprayed element.
    • Rotation and Offset: Rotates the elements relative to the path or scatters them away from the centerline.
