How to Create Color Separations in CorelDRAW
Creating color separations in CorelDRAW is a fundamental workflow for screen printing, lithography, and commercial offset printing. This guide explains how to properly prepare your vector artwork, select the appropriate color modes (CMYK vs. spot colors), configure print settings for separated plates, and preview the individual layers before printing or exporting to film.
Step 1: Prepare the Artwork Correctly
Before generating separations, your artwork must use the correct color palettes for your intended print process:
- For Process Printing (Full Color): Convert all objects, fills, outlines, and imported images to the CMYK color space. CorelDRAW will automatically split CMYK artwork into four distinct plates: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black.
- For Screen Printing (Spot Colors): Assign each distinct color using a spot color palette, such as the Pantone Matching System (PMS). Ensure you do not use standard RGB or CMYK mixes for colors that must print on their own dedicated screen; each unique spot color palette entry will generate its own separation plate.
Step 2: Open the Print Dialog
- Go to the top menu and select File > Print (or
press
Ctrl + P). - In the General tab, select your target device. If printing directly to a separation-capable printer or RIP software, choose that device. If saving a file for an external prepress service, select CorelDRAW PDF or Device Independent PostScript File.
Step 3: Configure Color Separation Settings
- Navigate to the Color tab at the top of the Print dialog box.
- In the Color output section, select Separations.
- A list of color plates will appear in the box below.
- If your document uses CMYK, you will see Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black listed.
- If your document contains spot colors, you will see each specific Pantone or custom spot color listed alongside or in place of the CMYK plates.
- Uncheck any plate you do not wish to output.
- To convert a spot color into a CMYK process plate instead of outputting a dedicated plate, click the color icon next to the spot color name and choose Convert to CMYK.
Step 4: Add Registration and Prepress Marks
Registration marks are essential for aligning screens or plates during the physical printing process.
- Click the Prepress tab in the Print dialog.
- Check the box for Registration marks to add alignment targets to each printed page.
- Check Crop/fold marks to establish trim boundaries.
- Select Color calibration bar and Densitometer scale if required for ink density tracking.
Step 5: Verify in Print Preview
- Click the Print Preview button located at the bottom-left of the Print dialog.
- In the preview window, use the page navigation tabs at the bottom to click through each plate individually.
- Verify that the correct artwork components appear on each corresponding color layer in solid black (printer's film prints black for all plates regardless of the ink color).
- Inspect the placement of registration marks outside the design boundaries.
Step 6: Print or Export
Once verified, exit the preview window and click Print to send the separated files directly to your printer, RIP, or output file. CorelDRAW will generate a separate physical page or digital sheet for each designated color plate.
