How to Create a Clipping Mask in CorelDRAW
In CorelDRAW, clipping masks are created using the PowerClip feature, which allows you to place vector graphics, text, or bitmap images inside any designated container shape. This guide provides a direct, step-by-step walkthrough on how to place content inside a PowerClip frame, edit the masked elements, extract them when needed, and use fast right-click shortcuts to streamline your design workflow.
Understanding the Basics: Content vs. Container
A PowerClip operation requires two elements:
- The Content: The graphic, photo, or vector artwork you want to mask.
- The Container (Frame): The shape, path, or text object that acts as the mask window.
Method 1: Using the Menu Bar
- Create your artwork: Place your container shape and the object you want to mask on the canvas.
- Select the content: Use the Pick tool to select the image or object you want to mask.
- Open the PowerClip command: Go to the top menu and select Object > PowerClip > Place Inside Frame. Your cursor will transform into a large black horizontal arrow.
- Choose the container: Click directly on the outline or fill of the target container shape. The selected content will instantly be clipped inside the container boundaries.
Method 2: The Right-Click Drag Shortcut (Fastest Method)
- Select the object you want to mask using the Pick tool.
- Hold down the right mouse button on the object and drag it over your target container shape.
- Release the right mouse button when the cursor changes to a crosshair target icon.
- Select PowerClip Inside from the contextual pop-up menu.
Editing the Masked Content
Once an object is inside a PowerClip frame, you can reposition, scale, or edit it without breaking the mask:
- In-Place Editing: Hold Ctrl and click inside the PowerClip container to enter edit mode. Make your adjustments, then hold Ctrl and click outside the container to exit.
- Using the On-Screen Toolbar: Click on the PowerClip object. A small floating toolbar will appear offering quick buttons: Edit PowerClip, Select PowerClip Contents, Extract Contents, and Lock Contents to PowerClip.
- Direct Content Selection: Hold Alt and click the PowerClip container to select the content directly without entering full edit mode. You can then move or resize it using the bounding box handles.
Extracting or Removing Content
To release the masked artwork from its container:
- Select the PowerClip object using the Pick tool.
- Go to Object > PowerClip > Extract Contents, or click the Extract Contents icon on the floating PowerClip toolbar.
- The original content and the container shape will separate back into two independent objects.
Adjusting Alignment Preferences
By default, CorelDRAW may automatically center content when placed into a PowerClip. To change this behavior:
- Navigate to Tools > Options > CorelDRAW (or Preferences on macOS).
- Go to the Edit section under the workspace settings.
- Adjust the Auto-center new PowerClip contents option to either center automatically, fit proportionally, or leave the object in its current canvas position.
