How to Break Contour Groups Apart in CorelDRAW

Breaking a contour group apart in CorelDRAW separates the generated contour effect from the original object so you can edit, move, or color each element independently. This essential technique is commonly used in logo design, vinyl cutting, and screen printing. This guide explains the exact methods to split contour groups quickly using keyboard shortcuts, the right-click menu, and the standard menu bar.

Method 1: Using the Keyboard Shortcut (Fastest)

  1. Select the Pick Tool from the toolbox on the left.
  2. Click directly on one of the generated contour lines (not the original center object).
  3. Press Ctrl + K on your keyboard.

The contour will instantly separate from the source object.

Method 2: Using the Right-Click Context Menu

  1. Activate the Pick Tool.
  2. Right-click directly on the contour line itself. Ensure the status bar at the bottom indicates a "Contour Group" is selected.
  3. Select Break Contour Group Apart from the pop-up context menu.

Method 3: Using the Main Menu Bar

  1. Select the contoured object using the Pick Tool.
  2. Navigate to the top menu and click Object (labeled Arrange in older versions of CorelDRAW).
  3. Click Break Contour Group Apart from the dropdown list.

Handling Multiple Contour Steps

If you applied multiple contour steps (more than one offset line), breaking the contour group apart will separate the original object from the set of contours. The contour lines themselves will remain joined as a single group.

To separate individual contour lines:

  1. Select the remaining contour group.
  2. Press Ctrl + U (or go to Object > Group > Ungroup Objects).
  3. You can now select, manipulate, or delete each contour line individually.
