How to Apply Gaussian Blur in CorelDRAW

Applying a Gaussian Blur to vector shapes in CorelDRAW softens hard vector edges and creates realistic shadows, glows, or depth-of-field effects. Modern versions of CorelDRAW allow you to apply this effect natively and non-destructively, meaning the underlying vector object retains its paths and editability while rendering a smooth, pixel-based blur. This guide walks you through the step-by-step process of adding, fine-tuning, and editing Gaussian Blur on any vector object.

Step 1: Select Your Vector Object

  1. Open your CorelDRAW document containing the vector graphic.
  2. Choose the Pick Tool from the main toolbox on the left.
  3. Click on the vector shape, text, or grouped vector objects you want to blur. Ensure the object has the desired fill and outline colors applied before blurring.

Step 2: Open the Gaussian Blur Tool

  1. Navigate to the top menu bar and click on Effects.
  2. Hover over the Blur category in the drop-down menu.
  3. Select Gaussian Blur from the sub-menu. This will open the Gaussian Blur dialog box.

Step 3: Adjust the Blur Radius

  1. Check the Preview box inside the dialog window so you can monitor changes on your canvas in real time.
  2. Drag the Radius slider to the right to increase the blur intensity, or to the left to produce a subtle softening of the edges. Alternatively, type a specific pixel value directly into the input box.
  3. Once satisfied with the spread and softness of the blur, click OK to apply the effect.

Step 4: Edit or Remove the Blur (Non-Destructive Workflow)

Because CorelDRAW treats Gaussian Blur as a live effect on vector shapes, you can modify it at any time:

  1. Select the blurred vector object with the Pick Tool.
  2. Open the Properties docker (go to Window > Dockers > Properties if it is not already visible).
  3. Click on the FX (Effects) tab within the docker.
  4. Locate the Gaussian Blur entry in the effects list.
    • Click the pencil icon or double-click the effect to reopen the dialog and change the radius.
    • Click the eye icon to toggle the blur visibility on or off.
    • Click the trash can icon to completely remove the blur and revert to the original vector shape.
