How to Adjust Drop Shadow Feathering in CorelDRAW
Adjusting drop shadow feathering in CorelDRAW allows you to soften or sharpen the edges of a shadow to achieve a more natural depth effect. This guide provides a straightforward walkthrough on using the Drop Shadow tool and the Property Bar controls to modify feathering values, adjust feathering directions, and change edge fading types.
Step 1: Select the Drop Shadow Tool
- Open your CorelDRAW document and select the object that already has a drop shadow, or select the object you want to apply one to.
- In the toolbox on the left side of the workspace, select the Drop Shadow tool (nested under the Effects group).
- Click directly on the drop shadow to activate its controls.
Step 2: Adjust the Feathering Amount
Once the drop shadow is selected, the Property Bar at the top of the screen displays the shadow properties:
- Locate the Drop Shadow Feathering slider (represented by an icon showing a blurred shadow edge).
- Enter a numerical value or move the slider between 1 and
100:
- Higher values: Disperse the shadow further outward, creating a softer, more blurred edge.
- Lower values: Keep the shadow compact, producing a crisp, sharper edge.
Step 3: Set the Feathering Direction
Next to the feathering slider on the Property Bar, you can choose how the blur disperses relative to the original shape boundaries using the Feathering Direction drop-down menu:
- Inside: Blurs the shadow toward the interior of the shadow boundary.
- Middle: Blurs equally inward and outward from the edge.
- Outside: Extends the blur exclusively outward beyond the original shadow perimeter.
- Average: Evaluates the edges to provide a smooth, balanced transition.
Step 4: Choose the Feathering Edge Type
To alter the rate at which the shadow fades from opaque to transparent, open the Feathering Edges drop-down menu:
- Linear: Creates a uniform, steady transition from dark to light.
- Squared: Produces an accelerated fade near the edges.
- Inverse Squared: Concentrates opacity toward the center and fades rapidly outward.
- Flat: Creates an abrupt drop-off with minimal gradient blending.
Once you have configured these settings, press Enter or click anywhere off the object to apply the final shadow appearance.
