How to Adjust Contrast and Brightness in CorelDRAW

This guide explains how to quickly adjust the brightness and contrast of bitmap images directly within CorelDRAW. Whether you are using traditional menu commands for a fast fix or using the Adjustments docker for non-destructive editing, these straightforward steps will help you optimize your image's tonal balance and clarity.

Method 1: Using the Brightness/Contrast/Intensity Dialog

This is the fastest method to apply direct changes to an image.

  1. Select the Image: Click on the bitmap image you want to edit on your canvas.
  2. Open the Adjustment Window: Go to the top menu and select Effects > Adjust > Brightness/Contrast/Intensity (or press Ctrl + B on your keyboard).
  3. Adjust the Sliders:
    • Brightness: Drag to the right to lighten the image or to the left to darken it.
    • Contrast: Drag to the right to increase the difference between light and dark areas, or to the left to flatten the tones.
    • Intensity: Fine-tune the brightness of light areas without clipping details.
  4. Preview and Apply: Check the Preview box to see real-time updates on your canvas, then click OK to apply the changes.

Method 2: Using the Adjustments Docker (Non-Destructive)

In newer versions of CorelDRAW, the Adjustments docker provides real-time, non-destructive editing that allows you to modify settings at any time.

  1. Open the Docker: Navigate to Window > Dockers > Adjustments (or Effects > Adjustments).
  2. Select the Image: Click your bitmap image to activate the controls in the docker.
  3. Add the Filter: If it is not visible by default, click the Add (+) button in the docker and choose Brightness/Contrast/Intensity.
  4. Modify Values: Move the Brightness and Contrast sliders until the image reaches the desired exposure.
  5. Toggle Visibility or Reset: Use the eye icon next to the filter to compare changes with the original image, or click the reset icon to return to default values.

Method 3: Using the Tone Curve for Advanced Control

If simple sliders do not yield the desired result, use the Tone Curve tool for precise tonal mapping.

  1. Select your image and go to Effects > Adjust > Tone Curve.
  2. Click on the diagonal line to add control points.
  3. Drag the upper-right section upward to brighten highlights, and drag the lower-left section downward to deepen shadows, creating an "S-curve" to naturally enhance contrast.
  4. Click OK to confirm.
