Essential CorelDRAW Selection Modifier Keys

Mastering selection modifier keys in CorelDRAW significantly speeds up your vector illustration and layout workflow. By combining keyboard modifiers such as Shift, Alt, and Ctrl with the Pick tool, you can precisely select multiple objects, target hidden or overlapping elements, and access individual components nested within complex groups without ungrouping them.

Shift Key: Add or Remove from Selection

Holding the Shift key while clicking objects allows you to select multiple items sequentially. If an object is already selected, clicking it again while holding Shift deselects it, keeping the rest of the selection intact. When using a marquee selection box, holding Shift adds all newly enclosed objects to your active selection.

Alt Key: Digging and Contact Selection

The Alt key serves two critical selection functions depending on how you use the Pick tool:

  • Selecting Underlying Objects (Digging): When multiple objects overlap directly on top of each other, holding Alt and clicking selects the top object. Clicking again while still holding Alt selects the object immediately beneath it, allowing you to cycle downward through the stacking order without moving any artwork.
  • Touch/Contact Marquee Selection: By default, CorelDRAW only selects objects completely enclosed within a marquee box. Holding Alt while dragging a marquee selects any object that the marquee touches or intersects, regardless of whether it is fully enclosed.

Ctrl Key: Selecting Within Groups

The Ctrl modifier allows you to select an individual child object inside a group without breaking the group hierarchy. Hold Ctrl and click on any specific shape, curve, or text element inside a grouped set of objects to select and edit its individual properties, fills, or nodes.

Combined Modifier Shortcuts

CorelDRAW allows you to combine these modifiers for more complex selection tasks:

  • Ctrl + Shift: Hold both keys to select multiple individual objects located inside one or more distinct groups.
  • Alt + Shift: Combines the touch-selection marquee with multi-selection, allowing you to add all objects touched by a new selection box to an existing selection.
  • Ctrl + Alt: Allows you to dig down through overlapping objects located specifically inside a grouped structure.

Spacebar: Pick Tool Toggle

While not a modifier combined with a click, pressing the Spacebar instantly toggles between your currently active drawing tool and the Pick tool, allowing you to switch to selection mode and back to your work instantly.
