CorelDRAW Trapping Settings for Registration Errors
Registration errors occur when individual ink plates misalign on a printing press, creating visible white gaps between adjacent colors. CorelDRAW provides built-in color trapping tools—including automatic spreading, overprint controls, and manual stroke adjustments—designed to overlap abutting colors slightly. This guide outlines the essential trapping settings and configurations in CorelDRAW to eliminate registration gaps and ensure clean commercial print output.
1. Enabling In-RIP and Application Auto-Spreading
CorelDRAW allows you to apply automated trapping directly during the print output process. To configure these automated settings:
- Navigate to File > Print.
- Select the Color tab and verify that the output is set to Separations.
- Move to the Separations tab and enable In-RIP Trapping (if supported by your PostScript RIP) or check Auto-spreading.
When using Auto-spreading, configure the following parameters:
- Maximum: This controls the maximum distance an outline extends to overlap an adjacent color. For standard sheetfed offset printing, set this value between 0.25 pt and 0.5 pt (0.09 mm to 0.18 mm). For flexographic or screen printing, increase this value to 1.0 pt to 2.0 pt to compensate for larger mechanical shifts.
- Text above: This sets the minimum point size of text that will receive automatic trapping. Set this to 12 pt or higher to prevent small typography from appearing distorted or muddy.
2. Overprinting Pure Black
The most common registration issue occurs with black text and line work placed over colored backgrounds. Knocking out the background behind thin black elements almost always leads to visible fringes.
- In the Print > Separations tab, check Always overprint black.
- Ensure pure black elements use 100% K rather than a rich black build (C, M, Y, K) for fine text and thin lines. CorelDRAW will print the black plate directly over underlying colors, completely eliminating the need for a physical trap border.
3. Setting Manual Trapping for Critical Graphics
When automatic spreading yields unpredictable results on complex vector artwork, manual trapping provides direct control:
- Select the lighter of the two touching vector objects (trapping typically expands lighter colors into darker ones).
- Open the Object Properties docker and add an outline (stroke) to the object.
- Set the outline width to double the desired trap width (e.g., a 0.5 pt outline creates a 0.25 pt overlap on each side).
- Assign the outline the exact same color fill as the object.
- Right-click the object and select Overprint Outline.
The outer half of the outline expands into the darker adjacent object and prints directly on top of it, locking the border against paper movement.
4. Adjusting the Trapping Threshold
In the auto-spread settings, set the Luminance/Threshold limit to dictate when CorelDRAW applies a trap. If two adjacent colors have nearly identical tonal values, CorelDRAW may not apply a trap automatically. Lowering the threshold ensures that lower-contrast borders still receive an overlapping boundary, preventing accidental gaps between mid-tone colors.
