CorelDRAW Publish to PDF Presets Explained
CorelDRAW provides several built-in "Publish to PDF" presets designed to automatically optimize files for specific workflows, ranging from digital distribution and web viewing to high-end commercial prepress and long-term archiving. Selecting the appropriate preset ensures that elements like color models, image compression, font embedding, and printer marks are configured correctly for the document's intended destination without requiring manual adjustments.
Archiving (CMYK and RGB)
CorelDRAW offers archiving presets designed around the ISO-standard PDF/A format, which ensures documents can be accurately viewed and reproduced far into the future.
- Archiving (CMYK): Embeds all fonts, preserves CMYK color data, and removes external dependencies to create an archival file suitable for future print reproduction.
- Archiving (RGB): Functions similarly to the CMYK version but retains RGB color spaces, making it ideal for the long-term digital preservation of electronic documents.
Document Distribution
The Document Distribution preset generates a lightweight, general-purpose PDF. It is optimized for sharing via email or viewing across different computer platforms. Images are compressed to balance quality with a compact file size, and fonts are embedded to ensure universal readability on standard desktop PDF viewers.
Editing
The Editing preset is tailored for workflows where the resulting PDF must be reopened and modified in CorelDRAW or other vector editing software. It retains full vector editability, maintains high-resolution raster assets without aggressive compression, preserves color information, and leaves document layers intact.
Prepress
Designed for commercial print reproduction, the Prepress preset outputs high-resolution artwork suitable for offset and digital presses. It converts colors to CMYK, preserves spot colors, ensures high image resolution (typically 300 DPI or higher), and supports the inclusion of printer marks such as crop marks, bleed, and registration targets.
Web
The Web preset optimizes documents for fast loading over internet connections and display on computer monitors and mobile devices. It converts all color data to the sRGB color profile, aggressively compresses bitmap images to reduce file size, and downsamples resolutions to typical screen standards.
PDF/X Presets (PDF/X-1a, PDF/X-3, and PDF/X-4)
CorelDRAW includes ISO-standard PDF/X presets intended specifically for blind prepress exchange in professional printing environments:
- PDF/X-1a: Enforces strict print compliance by requiring all elements to be CMYK or spot colors, with all fonts fully embedded and no transparency or external references.
- PDF/X-3: Similar to PDF/X-1a, but allows color-managed workflows by supporting both CMYK and RGB color spaces with embedded ICC profiles.
- PDF/X-4: Supports modern prepress workflows by permitting native PDF transparencies, layers, and color management without flattening the artwork prior to output.
