CorelDRAW Hairline Path Width for Laser Cutting

When preparing vector designs for laser cutting in CorelDRAW, the required path width for cutting lines is the built-in "Hairline" setting. This article covers why the Hairline thickness is mandatory for vector cutting, its exact numerical measurements, how laser software interprets it, and the step-by-step process to apply it correctly alongside the proper color profiles.

The Standard Cut Setting: Hairline

In CorelDRAW, laser cutting drivers and RIP (Raster Image Processor) software distinguish between vector cuts (lines sliced through the material) and raster engraving (surface etching) based entirely on stroke weight and color.

To execute a vector cut, your line weight must be set specifically to Hairline.

If a line width is set to anything thicker—such as 0.5 pt, 1 pt, or higher—the laser driver will interpret the path as a graphic shape to be filled or engraved row-by-row, rather than a single vector cut path.

Numerical Equivalent of a Hairline

While CorelDRAW provides a predefined "Hairline" option in the outline width dropdown, the physical measurement corresponds to:

  • Inches: 0.001 in (or less)
  • Millimeters: 0.025 mm to 0.076 mm
  • Points: Approximately 0.072 pt

If your driver fails to recognize the preset "Hairline" label, manually entering a stroke width of 0.001 inches or 0.025 mm will achieve the exact same vector cutting command on virtually all laser machinery (including Epilog, Trotec, Universal Laser Systems, and Boss Laser).

How to Apply Hairline Width in CorelDRAW

  1. Select the Object: Use the Pick Tool (Spacebar) to select the vector shape or curve you want to cut.
  2. Set the Outline Width: Go to the Property Bar at the top of the workspace, locate the Outline Width dropdown menu, and select Hairline. Alternatively, press F12 to open the Outline Pen dialog box and choose "Hairline" under the Width settings.
  3. Set the Color (RGB Mode): Most laser cutters use color mapping to separate processes. Vector cut lines typically require pure RGB Red (R: 255, G: 0, B: 0). Right-click the pure red swatch on your RGB color palette while your path is selected to assign the outline color.

Important Configuration Tips

  • Use RGB, Not CMYK: Laser cutter print drivers read RGB values. Ensure your primary color palette in CorelDRAW is set to RGB, as a CMYK red line will not register correctly with the driver's vector cut commands.
  • Do Not Add Fills: Ensure vector cut lines have no interior fill. An accidental white fill can overlap and hide other cutting paths beneath it.
  • Avoid Scaling Distortions: In the Outline Pen dialog (F12), make sure "Scale with object" is turned off if you plan to resize your artwork, ensuring the path width never automatically expands beyond the hairline threshold.
