CorelDRAW Gamut Warning for Non-Printable Colors
In CorelDRAW, the Gamut Warning feature is an essential soft-proofing tool designed to identify and highlight colors that exceed the printable range of a designated output device. This article explains how the Gamut Warning operates, how to activate it through the Color Proof Settings docker, and how to adjust out-of-gamut colors to ensure accurate print results.
What is the Gamut Warning?
A color gamut represents the entire range of colors that a specific system—such as a monitor (RGB) or a printing press (CMYK)—can produce. Because RGB monitors can display significantly more vibrant colors than commercial CMYK printers can physically reproduce, designing exclusively in RGB often leads to dull, unexpected results in final prints.
The Gamut Warning in CorelDRAW identifies colors in your workspace that fall outside the printable color space of your target output profile. When activated, CorelDRAW overlays a visible warning highlight (typically a flat, noticeable color like bright green or gray) directly over any object or pixel that cannot be accurately printed.
How to Enable the Gamut Warning in CorelDRAW
To view non-printable colors in your design, you must configure soft proofing:
- Open the Docker: Navigate to Window > Dockers > Color Proof Settings (or press the Proof Colors toggle on the status bar).
- Select the Device Profile: In the Color Proof Settings docker, choose the color profile of the intended printer or standard press condition (such as GRACoL, SWOP, or FOGRA) from the Simulate environment list.
- Turn On Proof Colors: Check the Proof colors box to simulate how the final output will look.
- Activate the Warning: Check the Gamut warning checkbox. Any area of your artwork containing colors that cannot be matched within the selected profile will immediately be masked by the warning color.
Adjusting Out-of-Gamut Colors
Once the out-of-gamut areas are highlighted, you can resolve them before sending the file to production:
- Reduce Saturation: Lower the saturation or brightness of the highlighted objects until the gamut warning disappears.
- Convert to CMYK Palettes: Apply colors directly from a standard CMYK palette (such as the default CMYK palette or a PANTONE+ Solid to Process guide) rather than relying on bright RGB swatches.
- Change Rendering Intents: In the Color Proof Settings docker, test different rendering intents (such as Perceptual or Relative Colorimetric) to see how CorelDRAW handles the compression of out-of-gamut hues.
