CorelDRAW Automatic Print Orientation Settings

CorelDRAW includes automated print controls that ensure your designs translate accurately to paper without manual reconfiguration. This guide explains which print orientation settings adjust automatically in CorelDRAW, how the software handles mixed-orientation documents, and where to configure these automated features to prevent cropped artwork and reduce media waste.

The Auto-Rotate Feature

The primary automatic orientation setting in CorelDRAW is Auto-rotate. Located within the Print dialog under the Layout tab, this setting detects the aspect ratio of each page in your project and automatically adjusts the printer driver's orientation:

  • Landscape Detection: If the document width is greater than its height, CorelDRAW automatically instructs the print engine to print in Landscape mode.
  • Portrait Detection: If the document height is greater than its width, the print stream defaults automatically to Portrait mode.

When Auto-rotate is selected, you do not need to alter printer properties manually, preventing the design from clipping along the edges of the sheet.

Automatic Handling of Mixed-Orientation Documents

CorelDRAW supports multi-page files containing both portrait and landscape orientations within a single CDR file.

When you print a mixed-orientation document with the automatic orientation settings enabled, CorelDRAW dynamically sends orientation instructions to the printer driver on a per-page basis. The printer adjusts the layout orientation for each consecutive sheet automatically, provided the connected printer driver supports dynamic orientation switching.

Imposition and Layout Tool Adjustments

When preparing documents for commercial printing, booklets, or multi-up printing, CorelDRAW's Print Preview tool provides further automated adjustments:

  • Automatic Page Placement: In the Imposition Layout tool, pages rotate automatically to fit the target plate or paper size efficiently.
  • Work and Turn / Work and Tumble: CorelDRAW automatically reorients backing pages to ensure that margins, headers, and pagination align correctly upon double-sided printing.

Auto-Fit and Tiling Orientation

When sending oversized artwork to standard office printers or wide-format roll printers, two additional features automate page layout:

  • Fit to Page: Automatically scales and rotates the page to occupy the maximum printable area of the loaded paper stock.
  • Print Tiled Pages: If an oversized artwork must be split across multiple smaller sheets, CorelDRAW automatically calculates the most efficient sheet orientation to minimize the total page count and paper waste.

How to Enable Automatic Print Orientation

To activate these settings for your print job:

  1. Go to File > Print (or press Ctrl + P).
  2. Select your printer from the Printer dropdown menu on the General tab.
  3. Switch to the Layout tab.
  4. Locate the Page orientation section.
  5. Select the Auto-rotate radio button to allow CorelDRAW to manage the orientation automatically based on your document dimensions.
