Convert Spot Colors to Process in CorelDRAW

Converting spot colors to process (CMYK) colors in CorelDRAW is essential when preparing vector designs for standard commercial printing, avoiding costly extra plates, or ensuring color consistency across various print outputs. This guide outlines the most direct methods to convert spot colors to process colors across your entire document, through individual palettes, or during the final export process.

Method 1: Using the Find and Replace Tool (Document-Wide)

The Find and Replace wizard allows you to automatically locate all spot color instances in your active drawing and convert them to CMYK.

  1. Go to the top menu and select Edit > Find and Replace.
  2. In the Find and Replace docker, click on Replace Objects.
  3. Select Replace a color model or palette.
  4. Set the Find option to Spot color palette.
  5. Set the Replace with color model to CMYK.
  6. Choose whether to apply this to fills, outlines, or both.
  7. Click Replace All to instantly convert all spot colors in the artwork to CMYK equivalents.

Method 2: Editing Colors via the Document Palette

If your design uses specific spot colors listed in the Document Palette, you can change their color properties directly.

  1. Locate the Document Palette, typically docked at the bottom or side of your workspace (if hidden, enable it via Window > Color Palettes > Document Palette).
  2. Spot colors will display a small white dot or triangle in the corner of their swatch.
  3. Right-click the spot color swatch you want to convert and select Edit Color.
  4. In the Color Editor dialog, change the Color model dropdown from the spot library (e.g., PANTONE) to CMYK.
  5. Click OK. Any object in your document linked to that swatch will automatically update to a process CMYK color.

Method 3: Converting Spot Colors During PDF Export

If you need to keep your working file in spot colors but require a CMYK file for production, you can convert them during the export phase.

  1. Navigate to File > Publish to PDF.
  2. Click the Settings button next to the PDF Preset dropdown.
  3. In the PDF Settings window, switch to the Color tab.
  4. Ensure the Color management option is set to CMYK.
  5. Check the box labeled Output all spot colors as CMYK (or Convert spot colors to CMYK, depending on your CorelDRAW version).
  6. Click OK, then save your PDF. The resulting file will contain only four-color process separations.

Method 4: Converting at the Print Dialogue Stage

For direct printing to a PostScript printer or RIP software without altering the source file:

  1. Go to File > Print.
  2. Select the Color tab at the top of the Print dialog.
  3. Under the Color conversions section, select CMYK as the output color.
  4. Check the Convert spot colors to option and select CMYK.
  5. Proceed with printing or generating your separation preview.
