Configuring Line Styles and End Caps in CorelDRAW

CorelDRAW provides extensive vector stroke controls that allow designers to modify the appearance of open and closed paths for technical illustrations, graphic design, and print production. Through the Outline Pen tool and the Properties docker, users can customize line styles, dash patterns, and line end caps. This guide outlines the specific cap styles, dash configurations, and complementary corner settings available in the software to help you achieve precise vector line control.

How to Access Line Settings

Line attributes in CorelDRAW are primarily managed via the Outline Pen dialog (shortcut: F12) or through the Properties docker (Window > Dockers > Properties > Outline tab). Both interfaces provide access to width, color, styles, end caps, and corner options.

Configurable End Caps

End caps define the visual termination of open vector paths. CorelDRAW includes three distinct cap options:

  • Square Cap: This is the default setting. The line terminates immediately at the path's endpoint node with a sharp, 90-degree flat edge. The cap does not extend past the endpoint.
  • Round Cap: Adds a semicircular extension to the end of the line. The radius of the curve is equal to half the line width, extending past the endpoint node by the same distance. This creates smooth, rounded ends ideal for soft or organic illustrations.
  • Extended Square Cap (Flat Cap): This option creates a flat, 90-degree termination similar to the Square Cap, but it projects beyond the endpoint node by a distance equal to half the outline width. This ensures that intersecting perpendicular paths overlap evenly without leaving gaps.

Line Styles and Dash Configurations

CorelDRAW enables users to apply predefined or fully customized stroke patterns along a path:

  • Solid Line: The standard continuous stroke with no breaks.
  • Predefined Dash Patterns: CorelDRAW includes dozens of standard patterns, including fine dots, long dashes, alternating dot-dash sequences, and spaced dash variants.
  • Custom Dash Patterns: Clicking the Settings or Edit Style button allows you to build custom stroke sequences. You can adjust the length of individual dashes and the spacing between them by sliding controls on a grid, creating specialized patterns for architectural plans, maps, or border designs.

Complementary Outline Options

To further control stroke rendering, CorelDRAW pairs end caps and line styles with the following settings:

  • Corners: Choose how lines bend at sharp angles using Miter (sharp point), Round (curved transition), or Bevel (flattened corner).
  • Arrowheads: Open paths can be capped with pre-built or custom arrowheads and symbols on either the start node, end node, or both.
  • Behind Fill and Scale with Object: Ensures the outline stays behind shapes or proportionally resizes whenever the object is scaled up or down.
