Configure Pen Tilt and Touch Gestures in CorelDRAW
Configuring pen tilt and touch gestures in CorelDRAW allows digital artists to maximize the capabilities of their drawing tablets, stylus pens, and touchscreen monitors. This guide walks you through enabling stylus tilt and bearing, calibrating pressure sensitivity, customizing multi-touch navigation gestures, and switching to the touch-optimized workspace for a seamless workflow.
Setting Up Pen Tilt and Stylus Settings
CorelDRAW natively supports pen pressure, tilt, and bearing through both Windows Ink (Real-Time Stylus) and WinTab drivers.
1. Calibrate Stylus Pressure and Tilt
- Open CorelDRAW and click on Tools >
Options > Global (or press
Ctrl + J). - In the left panel, select Pen Tablet.
- Under the Tablet API, select Real-Time Stylus (recommended for most modern Windows devices and styluses) or WinTab (required for certain dedicated graphics tablets).
- In the Pressure Calibration area, use your stylus to draw inside the test box using varying levels of pressure and tilt. CorelDRAW automatically registers your range and adjusts the response curve.
- Click OK to save the calibration.
2. Apply Tilt to Specific Tools
Pen tilt is controlled on a per-tool basis via the Property Bar.
- Select a tilt-compatible tool from the toolbox, such as the
Artistic Media Tool (
I), the Paint tool, or the Eraser tool (X). - Locate the brush dynamic controls on the Property Bar at the top of the screen.
- Look for the Pen Tilt icon (an angled pen tip) and toggle it on.
- Adjust the Tilt range or baseline angle to define how the brush width, opacity, or rotation changes as you angle your stylus against the screen.
- Toggle Pen Bearing if you want the brush angle to rotate according to the physical direction your stylus is pointing.
Configuring Touch Gestures
Multi-touch gestures let you navigate, zoom, and rotate the CorelDRAW canvas without interrupting your drawing hand.
1. Enable Multi-Touch Navigation
- Navigate to Tools > Options > CorelDRAW > Display.
- Locate the Touch Gestures section.
- Check the box to enable multi-touch support.
- Configure the standard gestures:
- Pinch to Zoom: Pinch two fingers together or apart to zoom in and out of the drawing window.
- Two-Finger Pan: Drag two fingers simultaneously across the canvas to pan.
- Two-Finger Rotate: Rotate two fingers to spin the drawing canvas freely without rotating the actual vector objects.
2. Switch to the Touch Workspace
If you are working on a tablet or a 2-in-1 laptop without a physical keyboard:
- Click on Window > Workspace.
- Select Touch.
- The interface will switch to larger buttons, simplified toolbars, and contextual on-screen gesture prompts, making finger navigation and stylus interaction more accessible.
Troubleshooting Pen Tilt Detection
If CorelDRAW does not respond to your pen's tilt:
- Switch Tablet APIs: Go to Tools > Options > Global > Pen Tablet and switch from Real-Time Stylus to WinTab (or vice versa). Restart CorelDRAW after switching.
- Driver Settings: Open your tablet’s manufacturer software (such as Wacom Tablet Properties or Huion Tablet) and ensure that Windows Ink is checked for CorelDRAW.
- Hardware Support: Verify that your specific stylus model supports tilt sensitivity, as some entry-level digital pens only detect pressure levels, not angle or bearing.
