Configure Pen Pressure Curves in CorelDRAW

Configuring digital pen pressure curves in CorelDRAW allows you to customize how your graphics tablet responds to your touch, ensuring natural line variation and precise control over stroke width. This guide walks you through accessing the tablet settings, calibrating your pen's pressure sensitivity curve, selecting the correct tablet input API, and applying pressure-sensitive dynamics to specific drawing tools.

Calibrating the Global Pen Pressure Curve

CorelDRAW includes a built-in calibration utility that creates a customized pressure response curve based on your personal drawing style.

  1. Open CorelDRAW.
  2. Navigate to Tools > Options > Global (or press Ctrl + J and select Global).
  3. In the left sidebar, click on Pen or Tablet Support.
  4. Locate the Pressure Calibration or Stylus section.
  5. In the test pad provided, draw a series of strokes using your digital pen, varying the force from your lightest touch to your firmest stroke.
  6. CorelDRAW automatically maps these sample strokes into a custom pressure curve. If you want a softer response (lines get thicker with less force), apply lighter pressure during calibration. For a firmer response (requiring more deliberate force for thick lines), press harder.
  7. Click OK to save the calibration curve.

Selecting the Right Tablet API

If CorelDRAW does not register pressure changes or if strokes appear erratic, you may need to switch the tablet input technology to match your hardware drivers:

  1. Return to Tools > Options > Global > Pen.
  2. Under Tablet Input Architecture, choose between:
    • Windows Touch/Ink (RTS): Recommended for modern devices, Microsoft Surface tablets, and newer drivers from Wacom, Huion, and XP-Pen.
    • Wintab: Recommended for older digitizers or legacy tablet drivers.
  3. Restart CorelDRAW for the change to take full effect.

Applying Pressure Dynamics to Drawing Tools

Once the global pressure curve is configured, you must enable pressure sensitivity on individual drawing tools to see the effect on the canvas.

The Artistic Media Tool (Sprayer and Brush)

  1. Select the Artistic Media tool (I) from the toolbox.
  2. On the property bar, choose Brush or Calligraphic.
  3. Look for the Pen Pressure toggle (stylus icon) on the property bar and ensure it is activated.
  4. Adjust the Stroke Width setting to define the maximum stroke limit. The pressure curve will now modulate the width between the minimum and maximum values based on how hard you press.

The Freehand and Polyline Tools

  1. Select the Freehand tool (F5).
  2. On the property bar, enable the Expression mode if available in your version.
  3. Select Pressure from the dropdown menu to link line thickness, tilt, or bearing directly to your calibrated stylus curve.
