Built-in QR Code Generator Options in CorelDRAW

CorelDRAW features a fully integrated, vector-based QR code generator that allows designers to create, customize, and validate interactive barcodes directly inside the workspace without requiring third-party plugins. This article details the native options available in CorelDRAW, including supported data formats, styling controls, error correction settings, and the built-in code validation tool.

How to Access the Generator

To insert a QR code, navigate to Object > Insert > QR Code. Once created, all configuration settings are managed through the Properties docker (or Object Properties in earlier versions), under the QR Code tab.

Supported Data Types

CorelDRAW allows you to encode several distinct data types, each formatting the code for specific smartphone actions:

  • URL: Directs users to a specific website address.
  • Email Address: Opens the user's default email client with a pre-filled recipient address, subject line, and message body.
  • Phone Number: Prompts the user's device to dial a designated telephone number.
  • SMS: Pre-populates a text message to a specific number with optional draft text.
  • Plain Text: Displays raw alphanumeric text upon scanning.
  • Contact (vCard or meCard): Imports contact details (name, organization, phone numbers, email, and address) directly into the user’s address book.
  • Calendar Event: Adds an event with a title, location, start time, and end time to the user’s digital calendar.
  • Geo-location: Encodes latitude and longitude coordinates to open a specific location on a map application.

Visual Customization Options

Because CorelDRAW generates QR codes as vector objects, it provides extensive visual controls that maintain print clarity:

  • Color Customization: You can modify the pixel fill color, background color, and outline colors to match your brand palette using solid colors, gradients, or process colors.
  • Pixel Shapes: You can alter the shape of the data pixels (modules) from traditional squares to rounded rectangles, stars, or custom node shapes.
  • Margin (Quiet Zone): The tool lets you adjust the thickness of the white margin surrounding the code to ensure compliance with scanning standards.
  • Corner Styles: Modify the appearance of the three large position-detection markers in the corners.

Error Correction Levels

CorelDRAW includes standard Reed-Solomon error correction settings, which allow the code to remain readable even if partially damaged, obscured, or overlaid with a central logo:

  • Low (L): Recovers up to 7% of missing data; best for simple codes with maximum data density.
  • Medium (M): Recovers up to 15% of missing data; the default standard for general commercial printing.
  • Quartile (Q): Recovers up to 25% of missing data; recommended when incorporating moderate visual styling.
  • High (H): Recovers up to 30% of missing data; essential if you plan to embed an icon, graphic, or logo over the center of the code.

The Validation Tool

To prevent design choices from rendering the barcode unreadable, CorelDRAW includes a real-time Validate button at the bottom of the QR code properties panel. This feature tests the contrast, pixel structure, and error-correction integrity, providing an immediate warning if the generated design cannot be read reliably by standard scanning devices.
