Assigning URL Links to Shapes in CorelDRAW
CorelDRAW allows designers to transform static vector illustrations into interactive graphics by embedding hyperlinks directly into vector objects. This article outlines the specific types of URL links you can assign to vector shapes in CorelDRAW, how these links function across different export formats, and the exact steps required to attach web addresses to your design elements.
Supported URL Formats and Protocols
CorelDRAW supports standard Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs), allowing vector shapes to serve as functional buttons or hotspots. The types of links you can assign include:
- Web Addresses (HTTP / HTTPS): Standard web links
such as
https://www.example.com. These are the most common links, directing users to specific websites, online portfolios, or landing pages when clicked in supported formats like PDF or HTML. - Email Links (
mailto:): Pre-formatted email prompts using themailto:name@example.comsyntax. When clicked, this prompts the user’s default email client to open a new message window addressed to the designated recipient. - File Transfer Links (
ftp://): File Transfer Protocol paths used to direct users to downloadable assets hosted on dedicated FTP servers. - Local and Network Files (
file:///): Direct pathways to local files or network shares, commonly used in corporate intranet documentation or local PDF distributions. - Telephone Links (
tel:): Mobile-optimized links formatted astel:+1234567890. When accessed on mobile devices or computers with softphone software, clicking the vector shape initiates a phone call. - Document Bookmarks and Page Jumps: Internal links that jump to a specific page or predefined bookmark within a multi-page document, primarily utilized in interactive PDF publishing.
How to Assign a URL to a Vector Shape
- Select the vector shape using the Pick tool.
- Open the Properties docker (go to Window > Dockers > Properties or press Alt + Enter).
- Click the Summary or Internet tab within the Properties docker, depending on your version of CorelDRAW. Alternatively, enable the Internet toolbar by going to Window > Toolbars > Internet.
- In the URL field, enter or paste the full target
address, ensuring the protocol prefix (such as
https://) is included. - Set the Target frame if needed (for web output),
such as
_blankto open the destination in a new window or tab, or_selfto open it in the same frame.
Exporting Interactive Vector Shapes
Hyperlinks attached to vector objects are not active while editing on the design canvas; they become functional once the artwork is exported to an interactive file format:
- PDF: The most common format for preserving CorelDRAW hyperlinks. When publishing to PDF (File > Publish to PDF), ensure the Include hyperlinks option is checked in the PDF Settings under the Document tab.
- HTML: Preserves vector links by converting shapes into image maps or linked graphic elements for web layouts.
- SVG: Exports the vector geometry alongside standard
XML
<a xlink:href="...">wrapper tags, maintaining both scalability and web interactivity.
