Assign Soft Proof Color Profiles in CorelDRAW

Soft proofing in CorelDRAW allows you to preview on-screen how your artwork will look when printed or displayed on another device. This article provides a straightforward guide to configuring and assigning soft proofing color profiles using CorelDRAW's built-in Color Proof Settings docker, ensuring your final output matches your design intent without unexpected color shifts.

Step 1: Open the Color Proof Settings Docker

To configure soft proofing, you must access the dedicated color proofing panel:

  1. Open your document in CorelDRAW.
  2. Go to the top menu and select Window > Dockers > Color Proof Settings (or press the Proof Colors icon on the application status bar if enabled).
  3. The Color Proof Settings docker will appear on the right side of your workspace.

Step 2: Select the Proof Profile

In the Color Proof Settings docker, choose the profile that matches your intended output device:

  1. Locate the Simulate environment dropdown menu.
  2. Select the specific ICC profile for your target device. For example:
    • Choose a standard CMYK profile (such as U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2 or FOGRA39) if you are preparing files for offset printing.
    • Choose a custom profile provided by your commercial printer or paper manufacturer for fine-art/giclĂ©e printing.
  3. If your profile is not listed, choose Browse to import an ICC profile from your computer storage.

Step 3: Choose the Rendering Intent

Color profiles convert out-of-gamut colors based on rendering intents. In the docker:

  1. Click the Rendering intent dropdown list.
  2. Select the option that best fits your design:
    • Relative Colorimetric: Recommended for commercial print; preserves in-gamut colors and maps out-of-gamut colors to the nearest reproducible shade.
    • Perceptual: Ideal for photographic images; compresses the entire gamut to maintain visual relationships between colors.
    • Absolute Colorimetric: Simulates the exact color of the paper substrate, showing the unprinted paper tint.
    • Saturation: Prioritizes bright, vivid colors over color accuracy, suitable for business graphics and charts.
  3. Check the Preserve CMYK numbers box if you want to preview how raw CMYK values print without profile conversions.

Step 4: Enable the Proof Preview

Once your settings are configured, activate the preview directly in your workspace:

  1. Check the Proof colors checkbox inside the docker, or navigate to View > Proof Colors from the top menu.
  2. To check for colors that cannot be accurately reproduced by the target profile, check the Out-of-gamut colors box. Any colors that fall outside the printable range will be highlighted in a warning color (typically green or gray).

Your workspace will immediately reflect the simulated color space of the chosen profile. You can toggle View > Proof Colors on and off at any time using the keyboard shortcut or menu command to compare the proof with your working space.
