Turn Scanned Watercolor Splatters into Photoshop Brushes

This guide provides a complete, step-by-step workflow for converting physical watercolor splatters into versatile digital brush presets using Adobe Photoshop. You will learn how to capture clean scans, isolate the paint textures by adjusting tonal values, register the assets as custom presets, and configure dynamic brush settings for authentic, reusable results.

Step 1: Scan the Artwork

  1. Place your watercolor splatters onto a flatbed scanner.
  2. Scan the page in color or grayscale at a resolution of at least 300 to 600 DPI. Higher resolutions preserve fine edges and mist details.
  3. Save the scanned file in a lossless format, such as TIFF or uncompressed PNG, and open it in Adobe Photoshop.

Step 2: Clean and Isolate the Splatters

Photoshop creates brushes based on luminance: pure black becomes 100% opaque, pure white becomes completely transparent, and shades of gray create semi-transparency.

  1. Convert to Black and White: Go to Image > Adjustments > Black & White (or press Ctrl+Shift+U / Cmd+Shift+U to desaturate) to remove color data.
  2. Eliminate the Paper Texture:
    • Open the Levels adjustment by pressing Ctrl+L / Cmd+L.
    • Use the white eyedropper tool to click on the paper background, forcing off-white paper tones to pure white (#FFFFFF).
    • Drag the black and midtone sliders to darken the splatter body while keeping subtle, feathered edges intact.
  3. Remove Stray Artifacts: Select the Eraser Tool (E) or a normal white brush to paint over lint, dust, or unwanted marks surrounding your splatter.

Step 3: Define the Brush Preset

  1. Select the Lasso Tool (L) or Rectangular Marquee Tool (M).
  2. Draw a selection around an individual splatter.
  3. Go to the top menu and select Edit > Define Brush Preset.
  4. Enter a descriptive name in the prompt window and click OK. The new brush will immediately appear at the bottom of your Brushes panel.

Step 4: Adjust Brush Settings for Realism

Press F5 to open the Brush Settings panel and fine-tune how the preset behaves when painted across a canvas:

  • Shape Dynamics: Enable this option and increase Size Jitter and Angle Jitter slightly so each stroke varies in orientation and scale.
  • Transfer: Enable Transfer and link Opacity Jitter or Flow Jitter to Pen Pressure if using a graphics tablet. This mimics natural pigment layering.
  • Spacing: In the Brush Tip Shape tab, adjust the Spacing percentage to control the distance between repeated stamps along a continuous stroke.

Step 5: Save and Export the Brush Set

  1. Open the Brushes panel (Window > Brushes).
  2. Create a new folder by clicking the folder icon and move your new presets into it.
  3. Right-click the folder and choose Export Selected Brushes.
  4. Save the .abr file to a secure directory or cloud storage to back up your custom brushes or share them across different devices.
