Standard Color Profile for Web in Photoshop

When preparing graphics and photographs for digital web publication in Adobe Photoshop, the industry-standard color management profile is sRGB (specifically sRGB IEC61966-2.1). This article explains why sRGB is the universal standard for the web, how it prevents color shifts across different screens, and the exact steps required to configure, convert, and export your files accurately in Photoshop.

Why sRGB Is the Standard for the Web

Created jointly by HP and Microsoft in 1996, sRGB was designed to match the color capabilities of standard consumer monitors. Today, it remains the baseline color space for the internet, operating systems, web browsers, and mobile devices.

While wider color gamuts like Adobe RGB (1998) and ProPhoto RGB capture a broader spectrum of greens and cyans—making them ideal for print or raw photo editing—most web browsers and mobile screens default to sRGB. If an image saved in Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB is uploaded to the web without proper color management, the colors will often appear dull, desaturated, or completely shifted on the viewer's screen. Using sRGB ensures that your image looks consistent across the widest possible range of viewing environments.

How to Configure Photoshop for Web Design

To ensure your workspace accurately reflects how images will look online, configure your working space to sRGB:

  1. Go to Edit > Color Settings (or press Shift + Ctrl + K on Windows / Shift + Cmd + K on macOS).
  2. Under Working Spaces, set the RGB dropdown menu to sRGB IEC61966-2.1.
  3. Under Color Management Policies, set RGB to Preserve Embedded Profiles.
  4. Click OK to save the settings.

Converting Existing Documents to sRGB

If you have an existing image created in a wide-gamut profile (such as Adobe RGB), you must convert it rather than reassign it:

  1. Go to Edit > Convert to Profile.
  2. Set the Destination Space to sRGB IEC61966-2.1.
  3. Set the Intent to Relative Colorimetric or Perceptual.
  4. Ensure Use Black Point Compensation is checked.
  5. Click OK.

Note: Never use "Assign Profile" to change color spaces for web export. Assigning a profile changes how the raw color values are interpreted without converting them, which causes drastic color shifts.

Exporting Images for the Web

When saving your final image for web delivery, always ensure the profile is converted and embedded:

  1. Navigate to File > Export > Export As.
  2. In the right-hand panel under Color Space, check the box for Convert to sRGB.
  3. Check the box for Embed Color Profile. Embedding the profile ensures that modern, color-managed web browsers correctly interpret your image's colors.
  4. Choose your desired format (such as JPEG, PNG, or WebP) and click Export.
