Single-Letter Type Adjustments in Photoshop

Manual single-letter adjustments give designers granular control over typography by allowing individual characters within a text layer to be repositioned, scaled, and styled independently. While Adobe Illustrator features a dedicated Touch Type Tool, Adobe Photoshop provides equivalent functionality through individual character selection, Character panel properties, and vector transformation workflows. This guide explains how to manually target, transform, and adjust single letters within Adobe Photoshop while maintaining design flexibility.

Individual Character Selection and the Character Panel

The primary way to manipulate a single letter in Photoshop without breaking the live text layer is through character-level editing:

  1. Select the Horizontal Type Tool (T) from the Tools panel.
  2. Click and drag across the specific letter you wish to modify to highlight it.
  3. Open the Character Panel (Window > Character).

Once a single letter is highlighted, any parameters adjusted in the Character panel apply exclusively to that selection:

  • Baseline Shift: Raises or lowers the selected letter above or below the baseline of the surrounding text.
  • Vertical and Horizontal Scale: Distorts or emphasizes the selected character's dimensions independently of the rest of the word.
  • Kerning and Tracking: Adjusts the optical spacing between the selected character and adjacent letters.
  • Color and Styling: Allows independent application of color, faux bold, italics, or superscript to individual glyphs.

Converting Characters for Free Transformation

If an adjustment requires manual rotation or freeform movement that numeric inputs cannot easily achieve, Photoshop allows text to be converted for full manual manipulation:

  1. Highlight the target letter, cut it (Ctrl+X / Cmd+X), and paste it (Ctrl+V / Cmd+V) onto a new text layer to position it independently using the Move Tool (V).
  2. Alternatively, right-click the text layer and select Convert to Shape.
  3. Use the Direct Selection Tool (A) to click on the vector path of the specific letter.
  4. Press Ctrl+T (Windows) or Cmd+T (macOS) to activate Free Transform on that specific letter to freely scale, rotate, skew, or drag it anywhere on the canvas.

Note: Converting to a shape disables live font re-typing, so this technique should be used as a finishing step.

Integrating Illustrator’s Touch Type Tool via Smart Objects

For workflows that require Illustrator’s dedicated, non-destructive Touch Type Tool (Shift+T):

  1. Open Adobe Illustrator and create your typography.
  2. Select the Touch Type Tool, click any individual character, and visually scale, rotate, or move it without converting text to outlines.
  3. Copy the styled text and paste it into Photoshop as a Smart Object.
  4. Double-click the Smart Object thumbnail in Photoshop at any time to reopen Illustrator, adjust individual letters, and automatically update the Photoshop document.
