Restore Previous Versions in Photoshop Cloud Documents
Adobe Photoshop Cloud Documents automatically track and record project changes, allowing users to restore previous states, inspect prior iterations, and prevent data loss from accidental overwrites. This article details the native version history tools available directly within the Photoshop application and via the Creative Cloud web interface, explaining how to revert edits, open past states independently, and preserve key project milestones.
Using the Version History Panel in Photoshop
The primary method to roll back edits occurs directly inside Photoshop on desktop or iPad:
- Open the target Cloud Document (
.psdc). - Navigate to the top menu and select Window > Version History to open the Version History panel.
- Browse the chronological list of auto-saved and named versions.
- Click the three-dot menu icon (...) next to the
desired timestamp to access rollback options:
- Revert to this version: Overwrites the current document canvas with the selected historical state, making it the new active working version.
- Open in new tab: Opens the historical version as an independent, unsaved document. This allows specific elements or layers to be copied into the current file without reverting the entire project.
- Name this version: Assigns a permanent label to the state, preventing it from being overwritten or pruned by automated cleanup cycles.
Rolling Back Edits via Creative Cloud on the Web
Edits can also be rolled back without opening the Photoshop application by using a web browser:
- Log in to the Adobe Creative Cloud website.
- Go to Files > Your files and select Cloud documents.
- Click the specific file to view its preview page.
- Click the Timeline (Version History) icon on the right-hand panel.
- Locate the intended past version, click the more options menu (...), and select Revert to this version.
Version Retention and Management
Photoshop automatically captures states periodically while working, but unnamed versions are typically retained for 30 to 60 days depending on the Creative Cloud subscription tier. To keep a critical revision accessible indefinitely, use the Name this version option. Named versions remain permanently pinned in the history timeline until manually removed.
