Reshape Body Proportions with Liquify in Photoshop
This guide explains how to adjust body proportions using the Liquify filter in Adobe Photoshop without permanently altering your original image pixels. By converting your subject layer into a Smart Object before launching Liquify, you create a completely reversible workflow. This allows you to fine-tune adjustments, mask out unwanted warping on backgrounds, and re-edit your settings at any stage of the retouching process.
Step 1: Convert the Layer to a Smart Object
Open your image in Photoshop and select the layer containing your subject. Right-click the layer in the Layers panel and choose Convert to Smart Object. Applying filters to a Smart Object generates a "Smart Filter," which keeps all modifications editable and non-destructive.
Step 2: Access the Liquify Workspace
Go to the top menu and select Filter > Liquify
(or press Shift + Ctrl + X on Windows,
Shift + Cmd + X on Mac). The image will open inside the
dedicated Liquify workspace.
Step 3: Protect Surrounding Elements
Before pushing or pulling pixels, prevent background distortions and anatomical warping:
- Select the Freeze Mask Tool (
F) from the left toolbar. - Paint over areas you want to keep static, such as straight background lines, architectural features, hands, or adjacent limbs.
- To remove protection from an area, select the Thaw
Tool (
D) and brush over the red masked zone.
Step 4: Adjust Proportions with the Forward Warp Tool
Select the Forward Warp Tool (W) to
reshape contours:
- Brush Size: Set the brush slightly larger than the body section you intend to move (e.g., the entire waistline rather than a small segment of skin) to avoid unnatural dents and jagged edges.
- Brush Pressure: Lower the pressure setting to between 15 and 30. Low pressure allows for gradual, controlled movements rather than harsh shifts.
- Movement: Click and drag inward or outward with gentle, repeated strokes to sculpt the silhouette naturally according to underlying bone and muscle structure.
Step 5: Commit and Re-Edit via Smart Filters
Click OK to apply the Liquify adjustments and return to the main workspace.
Because the layer is a Smart Object, you retain full control over the result:
- Re-adjusting: Double-click the word Liquify beneath your layer in the Layers panel to reopen the workspace with all previous brush strokes preserved.
- Masking: Select the white Smart Filters mask thumbnail next to the Liquify entry. Paint with a soft black brush on the canvas to hide the Liquify effect from areas where unintended distortion occurred.
- Blending: Double-click the blending icon to the right of the Liquify filter name to reduce the overall opacity of the adjustment if the effect looks overly processed.
