Photoshop Paragraph Panel Text Alignment Guide

The Paragraph panel in Adobe Photoshop provides essential typesetting controls to format the alignment, distribution, and structural flow of text. From basic horizontal alignment options to advanced justification, indentation, and paragraph spacing, this panel allows designers to transform raw text into balanced, readable compositions within any design layout.

Basic Horizontal Alignment Options

The top row of the Paragraph panel features standard horizontal alignment settings that position text relative to its bounding box or insertion point:

  • Left Align Text: Aligns the text along the left edge, leaving an uneven ("ragged") right edge. This is the default setting for most Western languages.
  • Center Text: Aligns text symmetrically along the center axis, creating ragged edges on both the left and right sides.
  • Right Align Text: Aligns the text along the right edge, leaving the left edge ragged. This is commonly used for captions, headers, or right-to-left scripts.

Justification Controls

Justification aligns text uniformly against both the left and right margins of a text box by automatically adjusting the space between words and characters. The Paragraph panel includes four distinct justification settings:

  • Justify Last Left: Justifies all lines except the final line of the paragraph, which aligns to the left.
  • Justify Last Centered: Justifies all lines except the final line, which centers itself horizontally.
  • Justify Last Right: Justifies all lines except the final line, which aligns to the right.
  • Justify All: Forces every line, including the final line, to stretch edge-to-edge across the entire width of the text box.

Indentation and Margins

Below the alignment buttons, the panel provides numeric input fields to adjust margins and paragraph indents:

  • Indent Left Margin: Moves the entire paragraph inward from the left boundary of the text box by a specified point or pixel value.
  • Indent Right Margin: Moves the entire paragraph inward from the right boundary of the text box.
  • Indent First Line: Indents only the first line of each paragraph, creating traditional editorial paragraph styling without the need to press the Tab key.

Paragraph Spacing Controls

The panel enables precise vertical spacing between paragraphs without relying on empty line breaks:

  • Add Space Before Paragraph: Adds a defined amount of vertical padding directly above the paragraph.
  • Add Space After Paragraph: Adds a defined amount of vertical padding directly below the paragraph, maintaining clean separation between distinct blocks of text.

Hyphenation and Advanced Alignment Settings

At the bottom of the panel, the Hyphenate checkbox enables or disables automatic hyphenation, which helps prevent awkward spacing gaps in justified text. Additionally, through the panel's flyout menu in the upper-right corner, users can access the Justification dialog. This menu allows fine-tuning of minimum, preferred, and maximum percentages for word spacing, letter spacing, and glyph scaling to achieve optimal typographic balance.
