Photoshop Locked Layer Indicators Explained
Adobe Photoshop uses distinct icons within the Layers panel to signal when a layer or group has restricted editing capabilities. These visual cues appear directly on the layer row as well as within the panel's top control bar, instantly alerting users whether a layer is completely protected or partially restricted against specific adjustments like moving, painting, or altering transparency.
The Layer Row Padlock Icons
The primary indicator on an individual layer row is the padlock symbol located on the far right side:
- Solid (Dark) Padlock: Indicates that the layer is fully locked via the "Lock All" setting. No changes—including moving, painting, transforming, or deleting—can be made to this layer until it is unlocked.
- Hollow (Outlined) Padlock: Appears when a layer is partially locked. This indicates that one or more specific attributes (such as transparency or position) are locked, but other edits are still permitted.
- Background Layer Padlock: Default background layers automatically display a lock icon on the right, denoting that the layer cannot be moved, have its opacity altered, or support transparency without first converting it into a standard layer.
The Lock Control Bar Indicators
At the top of the Layers panel, directly beneath the blend mode menu, sits the "Lock:" bar containing five specific toggle icons. When a layer is selected, these icons visually reflect its locked state by appearing highlighted, depressed, or enclosed in a contrasting square:
- Lock Transparent Pixels (Checkerboard Icon): When active, edits only apply to areas with existing color, leaving transparent regions untouchable.
- Lock Image Pixels (Paintbrush Icon): When highlighted, painting, filtering, and pixel manipulation tools are disabled on that layer.
- Lock Position (Crossed Move Arrows Icon): When active, the layer's contents cannot be relocated, scaled, or transformed using the Move tool or Free Transform commands.
- Prevent Auto-Nesting (Artboard/Frame Icon with Arrows): Prevents layers from automatically shifting into or out of Artboards and Frames when moved across the canvas.
- Lock All (Padlock Icon): Activates all restriction types simultaneously across the selected layer or group.
Layer Group Indicators
When applied to an entire layer group, the lock icon appears on the right edge of the group folder row. Locking a group cascades down, applying the designated lock state to every layer nested inside that folder, even if the individual layers do not show separate padlock icons while the folder is collapsed.
