Photoshop Hyphenation: Prevent Awkward Line Breaks

Properly configuring hyphenation settings in Adobe Photoshop’s Paragraph panel prevents awkward line breaks by establishing strict grammatical and aesthetic boundaries for automated text wrapping. While Photoshop enables hyphenation by default to fit text within designated bounding boxes, unrefined settings often lead to severed short words, isolated syllables, or consecutive hyphens that disrupt readability. By customizing word lengths, character limits before and after breaks, and hyphen frequency, you can maintain clean margins and balanced text blocks across both justified and left-aligned typography.

To access these controls, open the Paragraph panel (Window > Paragraph), click the panel menu icon in the upper-right corner, and select Hyphenation. Within this dialog box, several key parameters directly dictate how Photoshop breaks text across lines:

  • Words Longer Than [X] Letters: Sets the minimum length a word must reach before Photoshop is allowed to break it. Setting this to 6 or 7 letters prevents short words—such as "into" or "water"—from being needlessly split.
  • After First [X] Letters / Before Last [X] Letters: Determines the minimum number of characters that can remain on the starting line or carry over to the next line. Setting both values to at least 3 eliminates awkward single- or two-letter stubs (like "re-" or "-ed"), preventing visually jarring fragments.
  • Hyphen Limit: Controls how many consecutive lines can end with a hyphen. Setting this value to 1 or 2 prevents "hyphen ladders"—an unsightly typographic error where several rows in succession end with dashes, creating visual clutter along the right margin.
  • Hyphenation Zone: Applicable to non-justified text, this setting establishes the allowable margin between the end of a line and the right margin before hyphenation is triggered. A larger zone creates a more varied ragged edge with fewer hyphens, while a smaller zone creates a tighter edge with more breaks.
  • Hyphenate Capitalized Words: Unchecking this box ensures proper nouns, brand names, and acronyms remain intact, avoiding confusing breaks in words that rely on recognition.

By fine-tuning these numerical values rather than relying on default behavior or turning hyphenation off entirely, you eliminate "rivers" of excessive white space in justified text and erratic edges in ragged text, achieving a professional typographic layout directly in Photoshop.
