Photoshop Contextual Task Bar Prompts for Selections
Adobe Photoshop’s Contextual Task Bar streamlines design workflows by dynamically detecting user actions and floating relevant next steps directly beneath the workspace cursor. When an active selection is made using tools like the Marquee, Lasso, or Object Selection tool, the task bar automatically transforms to present contextual controls—most notably, the text prompt input for Generative Fill powered by Adobe Firefly. This eliminates the need to navigate complex menus by bringing context-aware generative AI tools and selection refinement options directly to the active canvas area.
State Detection and UI Adaptation
Photoshop continuously monitors the canvas state. When active selection boundaries—commonly known as "marching ants"—appear, the application registers that the user has isolated a specific region of pixels. The Contextual Task Bar responds instantaneously by updating its displayed actions from standard canvas or layer tools to selection-centric commands.
The Generative Fill Prompt Field
The most prominent feature presented during an active selection is the Generative Fill button. Clicking this button immediately expands the bar into an active text input field directly below the selected area. This workflow functions through the following steps:
- Contextual Recognition: The presence of pixels within the selection signals Photoshop that the user may want to replace, extend, or alter that specific region.
- Input Activation: Upon clicking "Generative Fill," the bar reveals a prompt box with a placeholder reading "Describe what you would like to generate."
- Empty Selection Handling: If an area is selected with no text entered in the prompt, clicking "Generate" triggers an automatic, context-aware removal or fill using surrounding visual data.
- Descriptive Prompting: Entering descriptive keywords sends the masked area and the prompt directly to Adobe Firefly, generating multiple variations within a new Generative Layer.
Integrated Selection Controls
Alongside the generative text prompt input, the Contextual Task Bar displays adjacent tools tailored to fine-tuning the active selection:
- Invert Selection: Flips the active area to target the background rather than the subject.
- Refine Edge / Feather: Allows quick smoothing or softening of the selection boundary before applying a prompt or mask.
- Create Mask: Converts the active selection directly into a layer mask without accessing the Layers panel.
- Adjustment Layers: Offers quick access to apply non-destructive adjustments (such as Curves or Hue/Saturation) restricted to the selected region.
- Deselect: Provides a one-click action to clear the selection boundary.
Post-Generation Variations
Once a prompt is executed, the Contextual Task Bar adapts once more. It replaces the initial prompt input with variation controls, displaying arrow buttons that allow users to cycle through the generated results. Users can also enter updated prompt adjustments or click "Generate" again to produce additional variations, keeping the entire AI-assisted ideation cycle directly attached to the selected subject on the canvas.
