Photoshop Bleed and Registration Marks Setup
Preparing a file for professional output requires precise alignment indicators and cutting tolerances. Adobe Photoshop provides built-in output options within its Print dialog box that allow users to configure bleed parameters and printer marks, such as registration marks, crop marks, and color bars. This guide details the specific registration marks and bleed settings you can configure directly in Photoshop prior to sending your project to a printer.
Accessing Print Marks and Bleed Settings
To configure these settings, navigate to File > Print in Photoshop. In the print settings window, scroll down the right-hand options panel to find the Printing Marks section (labeled as Output in older versions).
Configurable Bleed Parameters
Photoshop allows you to define a print bleed if you are outputting directly to a PostScript-compatible printer or generating a print-ready file with embedded printer marks:
- Bleed Value: Clicking the Bleed button opens a dialog where you can enter a specific numerical width for the bleed margin (measured in inches, millimeters, or points).
- Crop Adjustment: Entering a bleed value shifts the crop marks outward from the trim line by the specified distance, allowing the printed artwork to extend beyond the final cut line. Note that this setting controls where the marks are positioned; it does not automatically scale or generate new artwork outside your existing canvas.
Configurable Registration and Alignment Marks
Under the Printing Marks options, you can enable several standard printer guides via individual checkboxes:
- Registration Marks: This setting prints standard alignment targets, such as bullseyes and crosshairs, outside the image area. Commercial printers use these marks to align cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK) separations precisely on the press.
- Corner Crop Marks: These place trim indicators at the corners of the document boundary to show the finisher precisely where to cut the paper to achieve the final dimensions.
- Center Crop Marks: These add hairline guides at the horizontal and vertical midpoints of the page, which are essential for aligning folds, perforations, or two-sided printing.
- Color Bars: Enabling this option prints a strip of standardized color patches outside the trim boundary. Press operators measure these swatches with a densitometer to check ink density, color balance, and dot gain during the press run.
- Description / Labels: This prints the file name and optional descriptive metadata outside the live artwork area, preventing confusion during prepress plate assembly.
Technical Requirements for Displaying Marks
For Photoshop to render registration marks and bleed lines, the target paper size selected in the print dialog must be physically larger than the document's canvas dimensions. If the paper size matches the canvas dimensions exactly, the marks will fall outside the printable area and will not appear on the final output.
