Map Pen Tilt and Direction in Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop allows digital artists to utilize the advanced capabilities of graphics tablets by assigning stylus tilt and stroke direction to dynamic brush behaviors. This guide explains how to configure Photoshop’s Brush Settings panel to map pen tilt and direction directly to stroke width and opacity, ensuring your stylus movements translate accurately to your digital canvas.
Prerequisites: Tablet Driver Setup
Before configuring Photoshop, ensure your graphics tablet supports tilt sensitivity and that the tablet driver software is properly installed:
- Enable Windows Ink (Windows users): Open your tablet driver settings (e.g., Wacom Tablet Properties) and ensure Use Windows Ink is enabled for Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop relies on Windows Ink API (or the legacy WinTab API via a configuration file) to register tilt and direction data.
- Calibrate Tilt: Use your tablet’s native software to confirm that tilt sensitivity is active and responding to angle changes.
Mapping Pen Tilt and Direction to Stroke Width
Stroke width is governed by the brush tip size controls in the Brush Settings panel.
- Open Adobe Photoshop and select the Brush Tool
(
B). - Open the Brush Settings panel by pressing
F5or navigating to Window > Brush Settings. - In the left-hand menu of the panel, click on Shape Dynamics (ensure the checkbox is ticked).
- Locate the Size Jitter section at the top of the pane.
- In the Control drop-down menu, select your
preferred dynamic:
- Select Pen Tilt to increase or decrease the stroke width based on the angle at which you hold the stylus against the tablet surface. You can use the Tilt Scale slider directly below it to adjust how aggressively the angle scales the width.
- Select Direction to vary the stroke width based on the physical vector/heading of your brush stroke on the canvas.
- Select Initial Direction if you want the width fixed per stroke based strictly on the angle of the stroke's starting motion.
- Adjust the Minimum Diameter slider to set the baseline stroke thickness when the tilt or directional threshold is at its lowest.
Mapping Pen Tilt and Direction to Opacity
Brush transparency and ink flow dynamics are controlled through the Transfer settings.
- In the same Brush Settings panel (
F5), click on Transfer in the left menu. - Locate the Opacity Jitter section at the top of the Transfer settings.
- In the Control drop-down menu under Opacity Jitter,
choose your mapping parameter:
- Select Pen Tilt to control opacity based on stylus angle. Holding the pen more upright or at an extreme angle will shift the stroke between translucent and fully opaque, ideal for shading techniques similar to traditional graphite.
- Select Direction to dynamically change the opacity based on the angle of your stroke path.
- Set the Minimum percentage slider to establish the lowest opacity level the brush can reach, preventing the stroke from becoming completely invisible if desired.
- (Optional) To map tilt or direction to paint density rather than overall transparency, set the Control drop-down under Flow Jitter to Pen Tilt or Direction as well.
Saving Your Configuration
Once your dynamics are configured:
- Click the Create New Brush icon (the square with a plus sign) in the bottom-right corner of the Brush Settings panel.
- Check the box labeled Include Tool Settings and Capture Brush Size in Preset.
- Name your brush preset and click OK to ensure your custom tilt and direction mappings are preserved for future use.
