How to Warp Text Along Curves in Photoshop

This guide explains how to bend, shape, and distort typography using the built-in Text Warp engine in Adobe Photoshop. You will learn the exact steps to access the warp controls, configure preset curve styles, adjust bending and perspective sliders, and maintain full text editability while achieving dynamic curved typography.

Step 1: Create and Select Your Type Layer

  1. Select the Horizontal Type Tool (or press T) from the Tools panel.
  2. Click on your canvas and enter your desired text.
  3. Highlight the text or select the text layer in the Layers panel to make it active.

Step 2: Open the Warp Text Engine

  1. With the Type Tool active and the text layer selected, locate the Options bar at the top of the screen.
  2. Click the Create Warped Text icon, which resembles a capital letter "T" resting over a curved line. Alternatively, navigate to the menu bar and select Type > Warp Text.
  3. The Warp Text dialog box will appear.

Step 3: Choose a Curve Style

In the Warp Text dialog box, click the Style dropdown menu to select a dynamic curve profile. The engine includes several presets suited for curves:

  • Arc / Arc Lower / Arc Upper: Ideal for uniform circular or semi-circular bending.
  • Arch: Bends the baseline upward while keeping the vertical stems aligned.
  • Wave / Flag: Creates alternating dynamic S-curves.
  • Rise: Slants and arches the text upward to simulate motion.
  • Fish / Shell: Produces progressive tapering along a curve.

Step 4: Adjust Dynamic Sliders

Once a style is selected, refine the shape using the adjustment controls:

  1. Orientation: Choose between Horizontal and Vertical to dictate the primary axis along which the text bends.
  2. Bend: Drag the slider left or right. A positive value bends the text upward or outward, while a negative value inverts the curve downward or inward.
  3. Horizontal Distortion: Shifts the visual weight and scale toward the left or right, creating a 3D perspective effect along the curve.
  4. Vertical Distortion: Scales the top or bottom of the letters to simulate vanishing points above or below the curve.

Step 5: Commit and Edit

  1. Click OK to apply the warp.
  2. The layer remains fully live and non-destructive. You can double-click the layer thumbnail at any time to edit the words, change fonts, or reopen the Warp Text engine to adjust the curve parameters without losing text fidelity.

Custom Curves: Type on a Path

For curves that require irregular or freeform contours beyond standard presets, use a vector path:

  1. Select the Pen Tool (P) and set its mode to Path in the Options bar.
  2. Draw your custom curve on the canvas.
  3. Select the Type Tool (T) and hover over the path until the cursor changes to an I-beam with a curved line.
  4. Click the path to bind the text dynamically along the exact vector contour. Adjust the text placement using the Path Selection Tool (A).
