How to Use Photoshop's Color Sampler Tool

The Color Sampler Tool in Adobe Photoshop allows you to place persistent reference points on an image to monitor precise color values in real time as you make adjustments. This guide walks you through locating the tool, setting sample points, reading color data in the Info panel, and managing samplers to maintain accurate color consistency across your workflow.

Locating the Color Sampler Tool

The Color Sampler Tool is nested under the standard Eyedropper Tool in the Tools panel. Click and hold the Eyedropper Tool (or press Shift + I repeatedly) until the flyout menu appears, then select the Color Sampler Tool.

Setting Up the Options Bar

Before placing points, configure the tool's behavior in the Options bar at the top of the workspace:

  • Sample Size: By default, this is set to Point Sample, which reads only a single pixel. Change this to 3 by 3 Average or 5 by 5 Average to prevent isolated digital noise from skewing your readings.
  • Sample: Ensure this is set to All Layers to read the cumulative color result of your entire layer stack, including adjustment layers.

Placing and Monitoring Sample Points

  1. Click anywhere on your image where you want to monitor color data. A numbered target icon will appear at that location. You can place up to 10 sample points on an image.
  2. Open the Info panel by going to Window > Info (or pressing F8).
  3. Each placed sampler appears as a numbered section inside the Info panel (e.g., #1, #2).
  4. When you apply adjustment layers such as Curves or Levels, each sampler entry in the Info panel will display two numbers separated by a slash (e.g., 120 / 145). The first value represents the original color value, and the second represents the adjusted value in real time.

Customizing the Color Readout Mode

You can evaluate specific color spaces independently for each sample point:

  1. In the Info panel, click the small eyedropper icon next to any active sampler number.
  2. Select your desired color model from the drop-down menu, such as RGB, CMYK, Lab Color, or Grayscale. This allows you to monitor print-safe CMYK values while working in an RGB document.

Moving and Removing Sample Points

  • To Move a Point: With the Color Sampler Tool active, hover over an existing target until the cursor changes to an arrow and target icon, then click and drag the point to a new location.
  • To Delete a Single Point: Hold Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) and hover over the target until a pair of scissors appears next to the cursor, then click the point.
  • To Remove All Points: Click the Clear All button in the Options bar at the top of the screen.
