How to Use Free Transform in Adobe Photoshop

The Free Transform command in Adobe Photoshop is an essential tool that consolidates multiple manipulation capabilities into a single interactive bounding box. This guide explains how Free Transform enables you to scale, rotate, and skew layers, along with the additional geometric adjustments it unlocks to alter the size, angle, and perspective of your artwork.

Activating Free Transform

To activate Free Transform, select the layer you wish to modify and press Ctrl + T (Windows) or Cmd + T (macOS), or navigate to Edit > Free Transform in the top menu. A bounding box equipped with eight control handles will appear around the content of the layer.

Scaling Layers

Scaling changes the physical dimensions (width and height) of a layer.

  • Proportional Scaling: By default in modern Photoshop versions, dragging any corner handle scales the layer proportionally, preserving the original aspect ratio.
  • Non-Proportional Scaling: Holding the Shift key while dragging a handle allows you to stretch or compress the layer along a single axis.
  • Center-Anchored Scaling: Holding the Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) key scales the layer outward or inward from its center point rather than the opposite corner.

Rotating Layers

Rotation turns a layer around a designated anchor point.

  • Free Rotation: Move your cursor slightly outside any corner handle until the cursor turns into a curved, double-sided arrow, then click and drag to rotate the layer freely.
  • Constrained Rotation: Holding the Shift key while rotating snaps the movement to 15-degree increments.
  • Adjusting the Center Point: A central target icon marks the pivot point. You can drag this point anywhere inside or outside the bounding box to rotate the layer around a custom axis.

Skewing Layers

Skewing tilts the layer vertically or horizontally, creating an angular slant while keeping opposite edges parallel.

  • Interactive Skew: Hold Ctrl + Shift (Windows) or Cmd + Shift (macOS), click any side handle (not a corner), and drag along the edge to slant the layer.
  • Context Menu Skew: Alternatively, right-click inside the transform box, select Skew, and drag any handle to slant along that specific plane.

Additional Transformations Within Free Transform

Beyond basic scaling, rotating, and skewing, Free Transform provides direct access to several advanced geometric modifications:

  • Distort: Dragging corner handles while holding Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (macOS) allows you to stretch points independently in any direction.
  • Perspective: Right-clicking and selecting Perspective allows you to move adjacent corner handles toward or away from each other simultaneously, creating an illusion of depth or 3D space.
  • Warp: Clicking the Warp button in the options bar or right-clicking and selecting Warp overlays a grid that lets you bend and reshape specific sections of the layer organically.
  • Flipping: Right-clicking inside the transform boundary offers options to flip the layer instantly along the horizontal or vertical axis.

Committing the Changes

Once the adjustments are complete, press Enter (Windows) or Return (macOS), or click the checkmark in the upper options bar to commit the transformation. To cancel the transformation without applying changes, press the Escape key.
