How to Share Color Palettes in Photoshop Swatches

Sharing project color palettes in Adobe Photoshop ensures design consistency across creative teams and external collaborators. By utilizing the Swatches panel, you can organize custom colors and export them as universal Adobe Swatch Exchange (.ASE) files or sync them directly through Creative Cloud Libraries. This guide outlines the precise steps to prepare, export, and distribute your project color palettes using both local file exports and cloud workflows.

1. Organize Colors in the Swatches Panel

Before exporting, group your project colors together to keep the palette organized:

  1. Open the Swatches panel by going to Window > Swatches.
  2. Click the Create New Group icon (the folder icon at the bottom of the panel).
  3. Name the group after your project and click OK.
  4. Add colors to the folder by sampling them with the Eyedropper Tool (I) and clicking the Create New Swatch (+) icon at the bottom of the panel, or drag existing swatches directly into the new folder.

2. Export as an ASE File for Universal Sharing

The most versatile way to share color palettes is by exporting an Adobe Swatch Exchange (.ASE) file, which can be opened in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.

  1. In the Swatches panel, select the folder containing your project swatches.
  2. Click the Panel Menu icon (the three horizontal lines in the top-right corner of the Swatches panel).
  3. Choose Export Selected Swatches.
  4. In the save dialog, name your file and choose the format:
    • **Adobe Swatch Exchange (*.ASE):** Best for sharing solid colors across Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
    • **Photoshop Swatches (*.ACO):** Best if your palette includes Photoshop-specific elements like gradients or patterns.
  5. Click Save. You can now send this file via email, cloud storage, or project management tools.

3. Share via Creative Cloud Libraries (Real-Time Sync)

If your team uses Adobe Creative Cloud, sharing through CC Libraries allows for automatic updates and immediate access without transferring files manually.

  1. Open both the Swatches panel (Window > Swatches) and the Libraries panel (Window > Libraries).
  2. In the Swatches panel, select your project swatch group.
  3. Click the Add selected colors and gradients to current library icon at the bottom of the Swatches panel, or drag the group directly into the Libraries panel.
  4. In the Libraries panel, click the panel menu and select Invite People (for edit access) or Share Link (for view and download access).

How the Recipient Imports the Palette

To load the shared palette, the recipient follows these steps:

  1. Open the Swatches panel in Photoshop.
  2. Click the Panel Menu icon in the top-right corner.
  3. Select Import Swatches.
  4. Navigate to the .ase or .aco file and click Open.

The imported color palette will appear at the bottom of their Swatches panel, organized and ready to use.
