How to Reset Colors to Default in Photoshop
In Adobe Photoshop, active editing often alters your color swatches, leaving you with custom tones that need to be cleared. This guide explains how to instantly reset your foreground and background colors back to the default pure black and pure white settings using either a single keyboard shortcut or the Tools panel.
The Keyboard Shortcut Method
The fastest way to reset your colors is by using the default color shortcut:
- Open Adobe Photoshop with any document active.
- Press the D key on your keyboard.
Your foreground color will instantly change to pure black, and your background color will change to pure white. This shortcut works across both Windows and macOS, provided you are not currently editing text inside a text box.
The Toolbar Method
If you prefer using your mouse, you can reset the colors directly from the Photoshop interface:
- Locate the Tools panel, typically positioned on the left side of your screen.
- Look at the bottom of the panel where the two overlapping color squares (foreground and background swatches) are located.
- Click the miniature black and white squares icon located just above and to the left of the main color squares.
Clicking this icon immediately restores the foreground to black and the background to white.
Swapping Foreground and Background Colors
Once reset, if you need white as your foreground color and black as your background:
- Press the X key on your keyboard, or click the curved double-headed arrow icon located in the top-right corner of the color swatches in the Tools panel.
