How to Import Substance 3D Materials in Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop integrates with the Substance 3D ecosystem primarily through the official Substance 3D Materials plugin, enabling designers to import, apply, and edit parametric textures directly within their 2D workflows. By importing Substance Archive (.sbsar) files, users can leverage procedural 3D materials as non-destructive layers that feature customizable parameters such as roughness, metallic sheen, color variations, and surface detail without leaving Photoshop.

The Substance 3D Plugin Architecture

The bridge between Substance 3D and Photoshop is established via the Adobe Substance 3D Materials plugin, available through the Creative Cloud Desktop application. Once installed, this plugin introduces a dedicated "Substance 3D Materials" panel within Photoshop's workspace (Window > Materials).

This panel acts as an integrated runtime engine capable of interpreting .sbsar files. Unlike static texture maps (such as standard JPEG or PNG files), .sbsar files are parametric, meaning they contain algorithmic instructions to generate texture maps dynamically at custom resolutions.

Steps to Import Custom Materials

  1. Acquire or Author the File: Create a custom material in Adobe Substance 3D Designer or export an asset from Substance 3D Sampler as an .sbsar file.
  2. Access the Materials Panel: Open Photoshop and navigate to Window > Materials.
  3. Load the Custom Material: Click the + (Add Material) icon located at the bottom of the Materials panel, or drag and drop the .sbsar file directly into the panel.
  4. Apply to the Canvas: Select a target layer or create a selection, then click on the imported material in the panel. The material is instantly applied as a special Smart Layer.

Dynamic Parameter Customization

Once a custom material is applied, it retains its algorithmic properties. Designers can adjust material parameters directly from the panel:

  • Procedural Parameters: Sliders created during the authoring phase in Substance 3D Designer—such as scratch intensity, pattern distribution, surface rust, or weave density—are exposed directly in Photoshop.
  • Resolution Independence: Materials can be regenerated at different resolutions (from 512px up to 4K) on demand without pixelation, ensuring crisp output for print or digital assets.
  • Lighting and Surface Angle: Users can adjust light directions and surface height maps, allowing the 2D layer to react believably to changing environmental lighting conditions within a composite.

Non-Destructive Editing

Because imported Substance materials generate Smart Layers, the workflow remains completely non-destructive. Layer masks, blending modes, and standard Photoshop filters can be applied on top of the material layer while preserving the underlying parametric controls, allowing for instant stylistic iterations at any stage of production.
