How to Import PAT Pattern Files in Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop relies on the .PAT file format to store
and manage collections of repeating textures, seamless backgrounds, and
custom surface designs. This guide breaks down what .PAT
files are, provides step-by-step instructions for importing them into
your Photoshop workspace, and explains how to apply and manage your
custom patterns efficiently across any creative project.
What is a .PAT File?
A .PAT file is Adobe Photoshop’s native pattern preset
format. It packages one or multiple image tiles into a single file,
allowing Photoshop to render seamless, repeating fills across
selections, shapes, and entire layers without manual alignment.
Designers commonly use .PAT files for web backgrounds,
print textures, architectural renderings, and digital illustrations.
How to Import .PAT Files into Photoshop
Photoshop offers multiple straightforward ways to load
.PAT files into your library.
Method 1: The Patterns Panel (Recommended)
- Open Adobe Photoshop.
- Go to the top menu and select Window > Patterns to display the Patterns panel.
- Click the menu icon (four horizontal lines) in the upper-right corner of the panel.
- Select Import Patterns... from the dropdown menu.
- Browse to the location of your downloaded
.PATfile, select it, and click Open. - The new pattern set will immediately appear as a folder inside the Patterns panel.
Method 2: Direct Drag-and-Drop or Double-Click
- Double-Click: Locate the
.PATfile in your system’s file browser (Finder on macOS or File Explorer on Windows) and double-click it. If Photoshop is running, the patterns will automatically install into your Patterns panel. - Drag-and-Drop: Drag the
.PATfile directly from your desktop or folder into the active Photoshop application window.
How to Apply Imported Patterns
Once imported, patterns can be accessed and used across various design tools:
- Layer Styles: Double-click any layer to open the Layer Style dialogue, check Pattern Overlay, and choose your pattern from the picker. Here you can adjust the scale, opacity, and blend mode.
- Fill Layers: Navigate to Layer > New Fill Layer > Pattern.... This creates a dedicated adjustment layer with a non-destructive pattern fill.
- Paint Bucket Tool: Select the Paint Bucket Tool
(
G), change the source menu in the top options bar from Foreground to Pattern, pick your desired swatch, and click your canvas to fill.
Managing and Exporting Patterns
To keep your library organized, you can create custom folders within
the Patterns panel and drag individual swatches into them. If you create
your own seamless tiles—by selecting an area and navigating to
Edit > Define Pattern...—you can export them for
sharing or backup. Simply select the patterns or folders in the Patterns
panel, click the panel menu, and select Export Selected
Patterns... to save them as a new .PAT file.
