How to Duplicate Layers Across Artboards in Photoshop

This article explains how to duplicate layer content across multiple artboards in Adobe Photoshop efficiently. Working with multiple artboards often requires sharing elements like headers, backgrounds, or logos. You will learn the most effective methods to replicate layers, groups, or assets into different artboards while maintaining exact positioning.

Method 1: The Duplicate Layer Dialog Box

The Duplicate Layer dialog provides precise control over the destination artboard.

  1. Open the Layers panel (F7 or Window > Layers).
  2. Select the layer or layer group you want to duplicate.
  3. Right-click the layer and choose Duplicate Layer... (or go to Layer > Duplicate Layer in the top menu).
  4. In the dialog box, find the Destination section.
  5. Keep the Document set to your current file.
  6. Open the Artboard dropdown menu and select the target artboard.
  7. Click OK. The layer will appear in the chosen artboard at the exact same coordinates.

Method 2: Alt/Option-Dragging in the Layers Panel

This is the fastest method for copying an element across artboards directly inside your workspace panel.

  1. Locate the layer or folder you wish to copy in the Layers panel.
  2. Hold down the Alt key (Windows) or Option key (macOS).
  3. Click and drag the layer into the folder/hierarchy of the target artboard.
  4. Release the mouse button before releasing the Alt/Option key. A duplicate will instantly populate inside the selected artboard.

Method 3: Copy and Paste in Place

To duplicate an element across multiple artboards without losing its alignment or relative position:

  1. Select the layer on your canvas or in the Layers panel.
  2. Press Ctrl + C (Windows) or Cmd + C (macOS) to copy the content.
  3. Select the destination artboard by clicking its title bar on the canvas or selecting it in the Layers panel.
  4. Press Shift + Ctrl + V (Windows) or Shift + Cmd + V (macOS) to Paste in Place. The layer will be positioned in the same relative coordinates within the new artboard.

Method 4: Dragging Directly Across the Canvas

If your artboards are positioned adjacent to one another:

  1. Choose the Move Tool (V) from the toolbar.
  2. Ensure Auto-Select: Layer is checked in the top options bar (or manually select the layer in the Layers panel).
  3. Hold Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS). Add the Shift key if you want to constrain the movement horizontally or vertically.
  4. Click and drag the layer directly from the source artboard onto the target artboard.
  5. Release the mouse button. Photoshop will automatically place the duplicated layer inside the destination artboard's layer structure.
