How to Create Spot Varnish Plates in Photoshop
Creating a custom spot varnish plate in Adobe Photoshop requires isolating target design elements and routing them into a dedicated spot channel within a multi-channel environment. This guide outlines the exact production steps to generate a spot channel, configure its ink properties, transition the document into a multi-channel configuration, and export print-ready separations for commercial prepress workflows.
1. Isolate the Varnish Area
- Open your finished CMYK artwork in Photoshop.
- Select the specific visual elements that require the spot varnish. Use the Pen Tool (P) for vector-sharp edges, or use Select > Color Range to isolate specific tonal values.
- If varnishing existing text or graphic layers, hold Ctrl (Windows) or Command (macOS) and click the layer thumbnail in the Layers panel to load its transparency as an active selection.
2. Create the Spot Channel
- Open the Channels panel (Window > Channels).
- With your selection active, click the Channels panel flyout menu (top right) and choose New Spot Channel.
- In the dialog box:
- Name: Assign an industry-standard name recognized
by prepress RIPs, such as
Spot Varnish,Gloss UV, orClear Varnish. - Color: Choose a high-contrast preview color (such as bright magenta or cyan) so the plate is visible against the CMYK design on screen.
- Solidity: Set between 0% and 100% (typically 50% for on-screen previewing, or 100% to simulate complete ink coverage). Note that solidity only affects on-screen display, not ink density on press.
- Name: Assign an industry-standard name recognized
by prepress RIPs, such as
- Click OK. Photoshop fills the selection with the chosen spot color inside the new channel.
3. Convert to a Multi-Channel Configuration
- Navigate to Image > Mode > Multichannel.
- Photoshop converts the document into distinct printing plates. The standard CMYK channels convert into separate Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black process channels, alongside your custom Spot Varnish channel.
- Review the Channels panel. Each plate is now fully separated and can be edited independently without affecting color balance across other inks.
4. Apply Trapping (Choke or Spread)
To avoid registration errors on press where the varnish might misalign with underlying inks:
- Select the Spot Varnish channel in the Channels panel.
- To "choke" the varnish (pulling the varnish slightly inside the ink area), invert the channel if necessary or use the selection method: load the spot channel selection, navigate to Select > Modify > Contract, enter 0.5 to 1 point (equivalent in pixels based on document DPI), and fill with black or white depending on the mask orientation.
- Ensure the edges are crisp and aliased to prevent fuzzy varnish borders.
5. Inspect and Export
- Toggle individual channel visibility in the Channels panel to verify that the spot varnish plate registers precisely over the process plates.
- Ensure the document resolution is 300 DPI or higher at the final output dimensions.
- Save the file in a prepress-compatible format:
- Photoshop DCS 2.0 (.eps): Standard for legacy multi-channel workflows. Set DCS to "Single File with Color Composite" and encoding to "Binary".
- Photoshop PDF or TIFF: Modern workflows often accept TIFF or PDF files that preserve spot channels. Confirm with your commercial printer's RIP specifications before final export.
