How to Convert Selection to Vector Path in Photoshop
Converting an active selection marquee—commonly referred to as "marching ants"—into a vector path in Adobe Photoshop allows you to transform pixel-based selections into scalable, editable vector shapes. This guide outlines the exact, step-by-step methods to convert any active selection into a Work Path using the Paths panel or canvas context menus, including how to adjust conversion tolerance for optimal anchor point placement.
Method 1: Using the Paths Panel
- Activate the Selection: Ensure your selection marquee is visible and active on the canvas.
- Open the Paths Panel: Go to the top menu bar and select Window > Paths if the panel is not already open in your workspace.
- Open the Path Options: Click the panel menu icon
(four horizontal lines in the top-right corner of the Paths panel) and
select Make Work Path...
- Alternative Quick Method: Click the Make work path from selection icon at the bottom of the Paths panel (a small circle with four points). Note that this skips the tolerance dialog and applies the default tolerance.
- Set the Tolerance Value: If using the menu command,
enter a value between 0.5 and 10.0 pixels in the
Tolerance dialog box:
- Lower values (e.g., 0.5 – 1.0): Closely adhere to the selection's pixels, resulting in more anchor points and sharper corners.
- Higher values (e.g., 2.0 – 3.0): Produce a smoother path with fewer anchor points, which reduces jagged edges.
- Confirm: Click OK to generate the path.
Method 2: Using the Canvas Context Menu
- Select a Marquee or Lasso Tool: With your selection active, click on any standard selection tool in the toolbar (such as the Rectangular Marquee Tool or the Lasso Tool).
- Right-Click inside the Selection: Place your cursor directly inside the active selection area on your canvas and right-click (or Control-click on macOS).
- Choose Make Work Path: Select Make Work Path... from the context menu.
- Set the Tolerance: Enter your desired pixel tolerance in the prompt window and click OK.
Saving the Work Path
Photoshop generates the new vector path as a temporary Work Path, which can be overwritten by subsequent selection conversions. To preserve it:
- Locate the Work Path in the Paths panel.
- Double-click the name Work Path.
- Enter a new name in the Save Path dialog box and press Enter (or click OK).
The vector path is now permanently stored in the document and can be edited with the Direct Selection Tool (A), converted into a vector mask, or exported for vector editing.
