How to Choose AI Variations in Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop leverages Adobe Firefly generative AI to give users multiple visual options every time a generative tool is used. Whenever you use features like Generative Fill or Generative Expand, Photoshop automatically produces a set of alternative results known as "Variations." This article explains how to navigate, preview, generate, and manage these AI variations to find the perfect match for your creative project.

Generating the Initial Variations

When you make a selection, enter a text prompt, and click "Generate," Photoshop creates a new dedicated Generative Layer. By default, the AI generates three distinct variations based on your prompt and the surrounding image context. These options allow you to explore different compositions, textures, and lighting styles without having to re-type your prompt.

Switching Between Variations

You can preview and toggle between different variations using two primary interfaces:

  1. The Contextual Task Bar: Once the generation process finishes, the floating Contextual Task Bar displays navigation arrows (left and right) alongside an indicator showing the current variation number (e.g., "1/3"). Clicking the arrows instantly updates the canvas with the selected variation.
  2. The Properties Panel: For a side-by-side comparison, open the Properties panel (Window > Properties). Here, all generated variations are displayed as small thumbnail previews. Clicking any thumbnail immediately applies that specific variation to the canvas.

Creating More Variations

If none of the initial three results meet your requirements, you can generate more without losing the existing ones:

  • Keep the Generative Layer selected.
  • Click the Generate button in either the Contextual Task Bar or the Properties panel.
  • Photoshop will produce another batch of three variations, adding them to the existing list in the Properties panel.
  • You can also modify your text prompt in the Properties panel and click "Generate" again; the new variations will appear alongside your earlier results, allowing you to compare iterations easily.

Managing and Deleting Variations

Variations are stored directly within the PSD file, which can increase file size over time. To keep your project organized:

  • Select an unwanted variation thumbnail in the Properties panel.
  • Click the Delete (trash can) icon to remove it.
  • Because Generative Layers are non-destructive, switching between variations or deleting them never modifies your original underlying artwork.
