How to Automatically Straighten Horizons in Photoshop
Crooked horizon lines are a common issue in landscape and outdoor photography, but Adobe Photoshop allows you to correct them instantly using the automated Straighten feature integrated directly into the Crop Tool. This guide explains how to automatically level your horizon lines in a few simple steps, rotate your image to the exact degree needed, and preserve your composition using automated boundary fills.
Step 1: Select the Crop Tool
Open your image in Adobe Photoshop and select the Crop Tool from the Tools panel on the left side of your workspace, or press the keyboard shortcut C.
Step 2: Activate the Straighten Tool
Look at the Options bar running horizontally across the top of the screen. Click on the Straighten button, which features an icon shaped like a spirit level. Once selected, your cursor will transform into the Straighten tool icon.
Step 3: Draw Across the Horizon
- Click on one end of the tilted horizon line in your photograph.
- Hold down the left mouse button and drag a straight line along the visible horizon to the opposite side.
- Release the mouse button.
Photoshop automatically calculates the exact tilt angle based on your reference line, rotates the canvas, and levels the horizon instantly.
Step 4: Manage the Image Edges
Rotating an image naturally creates empty transparent wedges around the borders. You have two automated ways to resolve this:
- Standard Auto-Crop: By default, Photoshop scales the crop boundary inward to eliminate transparent edges, keeping only the original pixels.
- Content-Aware Fill: If you want to keep the entire frame without losing any of your photo to cropping, check the Content-Aware box in the top Options bar. Photoshop will automatically generate matching image data to seamlessly fill in the empty corners.
Step 5: Commit the Crop
Review the alignment on your screen. Once the horizon is straight and you are satisfied with the framing, press Enter (Windows) or Return (macOS), or click the Checkmark icon in the top Options bar to apply the changes.
