How to Automate Contact Sheets in Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop includes a built-in automation engine designed to assemble multiple images into professional grids with filenames attached. Using the Contact Sheet II feature, photographers and designers can bypass manual layout work and automatically generate structured, multi-page proof sheets for client review. This article details the exact configuration needed within Photoshop to automate this workflow from image selection to final export.
Accessing Contact Sheet II
To initiate the automated setup:
- Open Adobe Photoshop.
- Navigate to File > Automate > Contact Sheet II.
- The configuration dialog box will open, divided into three primary sections: Source Images, Document, and Thumbnails.
Source Image Selection
Under the Source Images section, define where Photoshop pulls the assets:
- Use: Select Folder to process an entire directory of client selects, or Files to pick specific images manually.
- Include Subfolders: Check this box if your photoshoot is organized into sub-directories (e.g., individual looks, scenes, or camera cards).
Document Setup for Review
The Document section controls the dimensions and color settings of the output pages:
- Units: Choose Inches for print reviews (e.g., standard 8.5 x 11 in) or Pixels for screen-based reviews (e.g., 1920 x 1080 px).
- Resolution: Set to 300 Pixels/Inch if the client intends to print physical proofs, or 72–150 Pixels/Inch for digital distribution via email or cloud storage.
- Color Profile: Select sRGB IEC61966-2.1 to guarantee colors display accurately across various client monitors and mobile devices.
- Flatten All Layers: Check this option to minimize file sizes and speed up processing time. Uncheck it only if you plan to manually edit individual frames later.
Thumbnail Grid and Layout
The Thumbnails section dictates how many previews appear per page:
- Place: Choose Across First to arrange photos horizontally in rows, or Down First to arrange them vertically in columns.
- Columns and Rows: Define the grid density. A 4-column by 5-row setup (20 images per page) is standard for quick client scanning, while a 2x3 or 3x3 layout allows for closer inspection of details.
- Use Auto-Spacing: Check this to let Photoshop evenly distribute space between margins. Uncheck it if you need specific pixel-width gutters.
- Rotate for Best Fit: Check this option to ensure landscape and portrait orientations maximize their allotted grid cell size without excessive cropping.
Captioning for Client Reference
Accurate labeling is critical for clients to provide actionable feedback:
- Use Filename As Caption: Check this box so the original file name appears directly beneath each image.
- Font and Size: Choose a standard, legible typeface (such as Arial or Helvetica) at a size between 8 pt and 10 pt to avoid text wrapping or truncation.
Running the Automation and Exporting
Once the parameters are set:
- Click OK. Photoshop will process the images and open each completed contact sheet as a separate document.
- To compile these pages into a single client-ready file, go to File > Automate > PDF Presentation.
- Choose Add Open Files, select Multi-Page Document, and click Save.
- Choose the Smallest File Size or High Quality Print PDF preset depending on your client delivery requirements.
