How to Adjust Baseline Shift in Photoshop
This article explains how to use the Baseline Shift control in Adobe Photoshop to format text for chemical formulas, mathematical exponents, and ordinal numbers. You will learn the exact location of the tool within the Photoshop interface, how to manually raise or lower specific characters, and how to use the built-in superscript and subscript presets for faster formatting.
The Baseline Shift Control
In Adobe Photoshop, the specific typography control used to adjust the vertical position of characters relative to the surrounding text is the Baseline Shift tool. It is located in the Character panel. Baseline shift allows you to move selected letters, numbers, or symbols above or below the default text baseline without altering the leading of the entire line.
How to Access the Character Panel
If the Character panel is not currently visible on your workspace:
- Click Window in the top menu bar.
- Select Character from the drop-down menu.
- The Character panel will open, displaying various typographic settings such as font size, tracking, kerning, leading, and baseline shift.
Adjusting Baseline Shift Manually
The Baseline Shift control is represented by an icon featuring a
lowercase "a" and an uppercase "A" with a vertical two-way arrow next to
it (aA). Next to the icon is an input box with a numerical
value set to 0 pt by default.
To adjust the baseline shift manually:
- Select the Horizontal Type Tool (or press
T). - Highlight only the characters you want to reposition (for example, the number "2" in the chemical formula \(H_2O\)).
- Go to the Baseline Shift field in the Character panel.
- Enter a positive value (or scrub the icon to the right) to raise the text above the baseline for superscripts or exponents.
- Enter a negative value (or scrub the icon to the left) to lower the text below the baseline for subscripts or chemical formulas.
- Reduce the font size of the highlighted characters proportionally to ensure standard typographic hierarchy.
Using Automatic Superscript and Subscript Buttons
Photoshop also offers automated presets that adjust both the baseline shift and font size simultaneously:
- Superscript (\(T^1\)): Highlight your text and click the Superscript button located in the row of type styling icons at the bottom of the Character panel. This automatically reduces the character size and shifts it upward.
- Subscript (\(T_1\)): Highlight your text and click the Subscript button in the same row. This automatically reduces the character size and shifts it downward.
While these automated buttons provide a fast solution, using the manual Baseline Shift numerical field gives you precise control over the exact placement and spacing of characters in technical documentation, formulas, and graphic layouts.
