Create Custom Vector Shapes in Photoshop
Creating custom vector shapes in Adobe Photoshop allows you to design reusable graphic elements, icons, and silhouettes that scale infinitely without losing quality. This guide explains how to draw vector paths using Photoshop's native toolset, define them as reusable custom shapes, and organize them into custom shape libraries for efficient project workflows.
1. Draw Your Vector Path
To make a custom vector shape, you must first create a clean path or vector mask.
- Select the Pen Tool (P) or any base shape tool (such as the Rectangle Tool or Ellipse Tool).
- Look at the Options bar at the top of the screen and set the drawing mode dropdown to Shape or Path. Choosing Path is standard if you are tracing an outline.
- Draw your object on the canvas. If you need complex geometry, you
can combine multiple paths:
- Select a path component using the Path Selection Tool (A).
- In the Options bar, use the Path Operations menu to choose Combine Shapes, Subtract Front Shape, Intersect Shape Areas, or Exclude Overlapping Shapes.
- Once your paths form the desired final silhouette, choose Merge Shape Components from the Path Operations menu to flatten the vector outline into a single shape.
2. Define the Custom Shape
Once the vector path is complete and active, you can save it into Photoshop's shape presets.
- Ensure the path is actively selected in the Paths panel or highlighted on the canvas with the Path Selection Tool (A).
- Go to the top menu and select Edit > Define Custom Shape.
- In the Shape Name dialog box, enter a descriptive name for your new vector shape.
- Click OK. The shape is now saved to your local Photoshop preset list.
3. Organize Shapes in the Shapes Panel
To keep multiple custom shapes organized and easily accessible, use the dedicated Shapes panel.
- Open the panel by navigating to Window > Shapes.
- Click the Create New Group (folder) icon at the bottom of the panel.
- Name your group (for example, "Custom Icons" or "Logo Elements").
- Click and drag your newly defined shape—located at the bottom of the shape list—into your newly created group folder.
4. Export and Save Custom Shape Libraries
To back up your shapes or transfer them to another computer, export
them as a Shape Library file (.csh).
- In the Shapes panel, select the folder containing your custom shapes.
- Click the panel menu icon (four horizontal lines) in the upper-right corner of the Shapes panel.
- Choose Export Selected Shapes.
- Choose a destination folder on your hard drive, name the file, and click Save.
To load these shapes in the future or on another machine, open the
same panel menu, select Import Shapes, and locate your
.csh file.
