Convert Text to Shapes in Photoshop
Converting vector text into editable shape layers in Adobe Photoshop allows designers to manipulate individual glyphs, adjust vector anchor points, and create custom typography without losing resolution or rasterizing the layer. This guide covers the essential steps to transform standard Photoshop type into vector shapes and modify their paths using native vector tools.
Step 1: Create or Select Your Text Layer
Select the Horizontal Type Tool (or press T) from the toolbar, click on your canvas, and type your desired text. Style the text with your preferred font, size, and weight before converting, as the text will no longer be typographically editable once converted into a shape. Select the text layer in the Layers panel.
Step 2: Convert the Text to a Shape
With the target text layer selected, transform it into a vector shape using either of the following methods:
- Right-Click Method: Right-click directly on the text layer in the Layers panel (avoid clicking directly on the thumbnail or text name) and select Convert to Shape from the contextual menu.
- Menu Bar Method: Navigate to the top menu bar, click on Type, and select Convert to Shape.
The layer icon in the Layers panel will immediately change from a "T" icon to a vector shape path thumbnail, confirming the conversion.
Step 3: Customize the Vector Anchor Points
Once converted, the text is treated as a standard Photoshop vector path. To customize individual letterforms:
- Select the Direct Selection Tool (press A, ensuring you choose the white arrow, not the black Path Selection Tool).
- Click directly on the outline of any letter to reveal its vector anchor points and direction handles.
- Click and drag individual anchor points to alter the character's geometry, or adjust the Bézier handles to reshape curves.
- Use the Pen Tool (press P) to add, delete, or convert anchor points along the path for advanced alterations.
Step 4: Adjust Fill, Stroke, and Path Properties
Because the layer is now a standard shape layer, you can modify its appearance using the options bar at the top of the screen:
- Activate any shape or vector tool (such as the Rectangle Tool or Direct Selection Tool).
- Use the Fill dropdown in the options bar to change the color, apply gradients, or set patterns.
- Use the Stroke options to add outlines, change stroke weights, or choose dashed and dotted stroke styles.
- Use the Path Operations menu to combine, subtract, or intersect overlapping letters.
