Convert Raster Text to Vector Paths in Photoshop
Converting raster text into editable vector paths in Adobe Photoshop is an essential technique for scaling pixelated typography without losing sharpness. This guide explains the exact method to select rasterized text outlines, transform those pixel boundaries into a functional work path, and output the result as a fully editable vector shape layer using Photoshop's native toolset.
Step 1: Select the Raster Text Outlines
Before creating paths, you must define the boundaries of the rasterized text.
- Locate the raster text layer in the Layers panel.
- Hold Ctrl (Windows) or Command (macOS) and click directly on the layer thumbnail to automatically load the pixel boundaries as an active selection (marching ants).
- If the text is merged with a background, use the Magic Wand Tool (W) or go to Select > Color Range to isolate the text pixels, then confirm the selection.
Step 2: Convert the Selection into a Work Path
Photoshop uses active selections to calculate mathematical vector anchor points.
- Switch to any selection tool, such as the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M).
- Right-click anywhere inside the active selection canvas and choose Make Work Path... (Alternatively, open the Paths panel via Window > Paths and click the Make work path from selection icon at the bottom).
- In the dialog box, set the Tolerance value.
- A lower value (e.g., 1.0 pixel) adheres closely to the pixel edges, capturing sharp corners.
- A higher value (e.g., 2.0 pixels) creates smoother curves by generating fewer anchor points.
- Click OK. The selection will turn into a vector path outline.
Step 3: Turn the Work Path into an Editable Vector Shape
To make the path functional and easily stylable, convert it into a shape layer.
- Ensure the work path is active in the Paths panel.
- Go to the top menu and select Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color...
- Name the layer, click OK, and choose a color in the Color Picker.
- Photoshop will generate a new vector shape layer masked precisely to your converted text paths.
Step 4: Edit the Vector Paths
The raster text is now composed entirely of vector paths:
- Select the Direct Selection Tool (A) to click on individual anchor points and adjust corner positions or direction handles.
- Use the Pen Tool (P) to add, delete, or reshape segments.
- Scale the layer using Free Transform (Ctrl+T / Cmd+T) infinitely without loss of resolution.
