Center Elliptical Marquee Selections in Photoshop

The Elliptical Marquee Tool in Adobe Photoshop creates selections from the center outward by using keyboard modifier keys during the drawing process. By default, Photoshop expands elliptical selections from a corner of an imaginary bounding box, but engaging specific modifier keys forces the initial click to act as the absolute center anchor. This guide explains how to enable centered growth, create proportional circles, and reposition your selection dynamically.

Drawing from the Center

To draw an elliptical selection from its center rather than its top-left bounding corner:

  1. Select the Elliptical Marquee Tool from the Tools panel (nested beneath the Rectangular Marquee Tool, accessible via the keyboard shortcut M or Shift + M).
  2. Position your cursor precisely over the point you want to serve as the center of your selection.
  3. Click and hold the left mouse button.
  4. Press and hold the Alt key (Windows) or Option key (macOS).
  5. Drag outward to expand the ellipse evenly in all directions from the original anchor point.
  6. Release the mouse button first, then release the Alt / Option key to confirm the selection.

Note: You must click before pressing the modifier key, or press them simultaneously. Pressing the modifier key prior to clicking may toggle the tool into "Subtract from Selection" mode instead.

Constraining to a Centered Circle

If you need a perfect circle that expands outward from the center point, combine the center modifier with the aspect ratio constraint modifier:

  • Windows: Click and drag while holding Alt + Shift.
  • macOS: Click and drag while holding Option + Shift.

The Shift key locks the width and height to a 1:1 ratio, while the Alt or Option key forces the growth origin to remain at the click point.

Adjusting the Center Point on the Fly

If your initial click was slightly misaligned, you can reposition the origin without restarting:

  1. Continue holding down the mouse button and your modifier keys.
  2. Press and hold the Spacebar.
  3. Move your mouse to reposition the entire selection to the correct center coordinates.
  4. Release the Spacebar (while still holding the mouse button and modifier keys) and continue sizing your selection.
