Batch Process and Rename Images in Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop provides an automated workflow to modify and rename large sets of images simultaneously using a combination of the Actions panel and the Batch command. By recording a series of adjustments once, you can apply those edits to an entire folder of photos while automatically establishing a standardized file naming convention. This guide outlines the complete process from recording your edit steps to running the automated batch execution.

Step 1: Record an Action for Image Edits

  1. Open a sample image from your project in Photoshop.
  2. Go to Window > Actions to display the Actions panel.
  3. Click the Create New Set (folder icon) button to organize your actions, or directly click the Create New Action (plus icon) button.
  4. Name the action (e.g., "Web Resize and Sharpen") and click Record.
  5. Perform the exact edits you want applied to all images, such as adjusting image size via Image > Image Size, altering color balance, or applying filters.
  6. Click the square Stop button at the bottom of the Actions panel once your edits are complete.

Step 2: Open the Batch Utility

  1. Navigate to File > Automate > Batch.
  2. In the Play section of the dialog box:
    • Set Set to the folder containing your recorded action.
    • Set Action to the specific action you created in Step 1.

Step 3: Select Source Files

  1. In the Source dropdown menu, select Folder.
  2. Click Choose and select the folder on your computer that contains the original images.
  3. Check Override Action "Open" Commands if your action contains an explicit open step, ensuring Photoshop iterates through all files in the designated folder instead.
  4. Check Suppress Color Profile Warnings and Suppress File Open Options Dialogs to prevent interruptions during execution.

Step 4: Configure the Destination and Renaming Rules

  1. In the Destination dropdown menu, select Folder.
  2. Click Choose to select a dedicated output folder to avoid overwriting your original source files.
  3. Locate the File Naming section to define the renaming pattern using the modular text fields:
    • Field 1: Enter custom document text (e.g., "Project_Name_").
    • Field 2: Select a numerical counter, such as 2 Digit Serial Number or 3 Digit Serial Number.
    • Field 3: Select extension (lowercase or uppercase) to ensure files retain their proper file type.
  4. Set the Starting serial# field (typically starting at "1").
  5. Check Compatibility options (Windows, Mac OS, and Unix) to ensure the filenames function correctly across all operating systems.

Step 5: Execute the Batch

  1. Under Errors, choose Log Errors To File and set a save location so processing does not halt if a single corrupted file is encountered.
  2. Click OK in the top-right corner of the dialog box.

Photoshop will automatically open each image from the source directory, execute the sequence of edits defined in the action, apply the new naming syntax, and save the resulting files directly into the destination folder.
